Day 3: Hot finals on tap
Men's vault and women's TJ finals are under way, and they'll be some hot ones. And the weather will match: Weather service says it's now 87 degrees with 35 percent humidity. Not a cloud in the sky. Wind: From the west northwest at 7 mph -- but flags at southeast end of Hornet Stadiun are drooping straight down -- no wind. Six so far over 18-0 1/2 (5.50). I'll start following misses more closely soon. Hysong has passed this height

Men's vault: Jumping begins!
Bar is up to 18-8 1/4 (5.70), which was a world record as recently as June 1976. Only four vaulters are out. Davis goes under bar on first try. Tye Harvey squirrels over, touching it a lot. It stays up. But he's called for Volzing - stabilizing the bar with his left hand. It's ruled a miss.

Hysong misses first try. Miles is over cleanly. Mack sails over at an angle. Walker misses first try, bowing the bar. Buller goes up slowly, misses. Helmeted Stevenson eschews his rythymic clapping for the first time -- and misses. Harvey misses. Hysong clears. Walker clears. Buller clears on his last try. Stevenson over on second try. Harvey clears on third try, goes crazy.

Men's vault: 8 alive at 19!
Scratch that earlier comment. The real jumping begins NOW. Eight men still in it at 5.80. Davis misses. Hysong passes this height. Harvey is first over -- on last remaining vault after passing. Bar at 19-0 1/4 bobbles but doesn't fall. Miles over cleanly. Mack misses. Walker misses. Buller misses. Stevenson's first try: clean clearance. Walker passes until next height. Davis passes. Stevenson is first over -- a new stadim record.

Men's vault: Bar set at 19-2 1/4
Up it goes to 5.85. So does the anxiety. Lots of strategic passing, and so much going on --women's TJ, women's javelin and now the men's 400 heats. Davis misses after Calvin Harrison wins heat in 45.22, ahead of Mitchell Potter's 45.23. Hurd fouls on last try in TJ. In vault, Hysong stalls out and bails out -- a miss. Mack gets body over but brings down bar. Walker misses. Davis mises, is out. Harvey barely misses. Hysong misses. Miles misses. Mack clears. Walker misses, is eliminated. Buller misses, is out, too. Harvey is out. Hysong goes under bar -- is out. Miles out, salutes crowd.

Men's vault:: Athens team decided
Bar goes to (5.90) 19-4 1/4 with only Stevenson and Mack still jumping. Miles wins third spot on vault squad on the countback rule (fewer misses, etc.). Mack is over on first try with lifetime PR. Stevesnson leads rhythmic clapping, goes up -- misses. Stevenson passes final two tries at 5.90.

Men's vault: Mack wants record
Tim Mack has the bar set at 6.04 (19-9 3/4), which would be an American record. Jeff Hartwig holds the record at 6.03 (19-9 1/4) set in June 2000.

Mack's first try: a close miss. Mack's second try: Another miss. Wearing Nike gray and close-cropped hair, Mack sweats out another wait for remeasure It's 93 degrees. He goes up, not over. Slaps the pit with his right hand. Day is done.
