If you missed the earlier posts of men's "results" for a 2004 virtual USA/USSR dual, this is just a fun exercise of looking at how the highly popular dual meets of the 50s and 60s might have turned out, based on personal bests in last year's outdoor season.

--End of Day 1--
Unfortunate, that the score wasn't closer at the end of Day 1: The 4 x 100 would have had every fan on his/her feet, screaming. Yes, I do know that teams don't run in the order fastest-slowest, but since the "virtual dual" is all a fantasy anyway, I guess I can run them that way for the fun of it. That would have the USA leading by .04 seconds at the first exchange, obviously from the stands dead even. At the second exchange, the USA lead has increased to .17 seconds: I think that margin, too, can't be seen, given the stagger. Jones boosts the lead another .13, and it's only in the run at the tape, with Inger gaining another sixth of a second over Khabarova, that the U.S. margin of victory, less than half a second, becomes apparent.

Waiting for Day Two Results
Hi, Andy:
For some reason, your comment reminds me of the kindergarten teacher who had her class busy, drawing pictures of "anything you want." She noticed one little girl concentrating furiously and asked what she was drawing. The girl said, "It's a picture of God."
"But honey," the teacher responded, "no one knows what God looks like."
And the little girl replied, "They will when I finish this."
--I'm not sure the final picture of Day 2 is worth the wait!
BTW--Thanks much, for all you do for our favorite sport in Canada!

And, BTW if you wondered why my posts showed 21 events, including relays, for the women and only 20 for the men: shame on you, for being picky-picky. Although I wondered about that, too. When I went back over my tabulations, I found that I had shown the total for the men after the PV as that after seven events, and also after the following LJ as again after seven events. Sorry about that: I think maybe there's something just not quite right about my lastest batch of home-bottled Merlot.
I'm not sure I've given as much credit as I should to Mirko Jalava's website <tilastopaja.net> for use of the data in his 2004 world deep lists. Once or twice, I had to dig deeper than the top 100 to find third and fourth places, and of course they were there, since Mirko's lists usually go 500 or more deep. Also, although I received my copy of Peter Matthews' ATFS/IAAF 2005 Athletics Annual after I'd already compiled the basic data from tilastopaja, I found Peter's athletes indexes invaluable for checking the spelling of athletes' names when I couldn't read the handwriting in my notes. If there still are errors to be found in the spellings, help me to blame it on the faulty batch of Merlot.
Cheers,
Roger

Roger,
Am I supposed to be the kindergarten teacher or student?
Anyway, I found this virtual competition very interesting. When you put the men and women's scores together, it comes out with USSR ahead by 20 points over USA (235 - 215). I guess I found that a little surprising. It was not what I expected.
One trend I noticed (more on the women's side than on the men's) was that the USA did very well in sprinting events, but not as well in distance and field events. I wonder if national governing bodies in track and field consider data like this in developing programs.
With the USSR split into smaller countries, there isn't as much competition for the USA for overall points. Any idea which country is closest competition with the USA for overall points?
