LoJo talking big?

Now it's the American men's turn to join the record-smashing, Johnson said.

And he is not just talking about Jeff Hartwig's U.S. record of 6.03 metres. Sergei Bubka's world record of 6.14 metres also is within range.

``I am very confident that I can jump at the world record, and over the world record,'' said Johnson, who has a personal best of 5.92 metres .

``It's just a matter of finding the right meet and the right conditions.

``At the U.S. indoor championships, I took shots at 6.15 metres that just about left the bar up on a couple of the jumps.''

A leap of 6 metres last weekend when the bar tumbled off as Johnson lay in the pit has given him new confidence.

More efficient speed down the runway, the result of training with renowned sprint coach John Smith, also has been a boost.

Dragila will take center stage in the women's competition on Saturday. Then it will the men's turn on Sunday as Johnson, Olympic gold medallist Nick Hysong and Hartwig vault for the three spots on the American world championship team.

Five of the top six vaulters in the world this year are Americans, led by Johnson and Hartwig.

well the last time i saw him jump, which was only a few months ago in Tennessee, he was having problems down the runway-slower than i can ever recall him being, and i believe he only cleared a height well under 19'. i have talked to some of the top guys out there about him on a few occasions, and one in particular said that LoJo could have already set the world record, he just had it in his head that he couldn't. its all upstairs once you have the technique down.---o, on a different note-ill be heading down to georgia in a few weeks, athens for a while, and then to Kennesaw-sp?-so if any georgia vaulters would like to fill me in on where to go when i get there-let me know.

Kind of hard to set the world record when you keep landing in the box. LB

I am home in Seattle for the summer, so I am not going to be on Athens until August. If you are looking for partying fun, just go wander around downtown and see what catches your eye. There are always a lot of good shows in town, so you could look into a concert or something.

And I have no idea what there is to do in Kennesaw. What brings you down there?

I was there the first time he jumped 5.50m Man what a talent! I still have never seen anyone so gifted.

But...

Classic example of what happens when coaches go for results first and sound fundamental development second. The injuries, the headgames, the shakey technique all stem from a rush to jump super high, super young. Tough to learn to vault on a 5m pole.

Oh yeah Skycock, go downtown to Molly's and get a Jaeger Bomb. 5 bucks gets you a drink and a cool t-shirt to go with it.
