Skipper on Spirits!
What do you guys think would cause Tommy to make the switch? I made the switch 3 years ago and haven't looked back since, but I am just wondering why he would switch from the kind of poles that had him jump 18 in high school and 19 in college? Is he on 5.20's too?

Maybe he's just trying something new. Jumping as long as he has, its fun to play around with different poles. You never know, you might pick one up that used to feel strange and have the best performance of your life. Spirits, Pacer, Nordic, ESSX whatever....they've all been over 5.80, 6m for the first 3. The pole doesn't make the vaulter. Tommy is so talented he can jump high on whatever he's got in his hands.
If someone tries to step on your dreams.... Step on their face.

Great point VaultNinja. There's a ton of truth to your last two sentences. I've had elite vaulters jump on every pole and switch between them with no problem. It comes down to the combination of refinement to their technique and power. Back around 2000 is was very common for some to practice on Spirits and compete on carbons. The guys/gals felt the quickness of the carbons matched up better with their meet adrenaline. I still do that today - Essx glas in practice and Essx carbons in meets. Whatever works!! I'll be 55 this year so I need all the edge I can get.
