Buzz up!

Norwin senior Mike Steffenino is an athlete who loves the outdoors.
When he's not participating in track, he's either throwing a Frisbee, fishing or hunting.

On Friday, Steffenino had a busy day at the sixth annual Latrobe Wildcat Invitational track meet.

He won the pole vault with a new meet record of 14 feet, 7 inches. He just missed clearing 15 feet for the second consecutive day, and he also finished fourth in both hurdle races (110- and 300-meter).

"It was an OK performance," Steffenino said. "I thought I could do better. Any time you break a meet record, that's an accomplishment."
Steffenino broke the meet record of 14-6 held by Indiana's Alec Rice, Baldwin's Ron Walters and Norwin's David Craven. He missed the stadium mark of 15-0, held by Hempfield's Mark Algeri. He'll attempt that next Saturday at the Westmoreland County Coaches' Association meet.

"I looked up to Dave when I was in middle school," Steffenino said. "So breaking his record made it a little more special.

"I've been struggling this season coming from indoors to outdoors. I barely cleared 12 feet earlier this season, and it's been a struggle to clear 14. I cleared 15 feet on Thursday at home against Latrobe and had another good jump (last night). I'm shooting for 16-6."

Steffenino said has the weather has warmed up and his jumps of gotten better.
