After clearing a career-best 12-0 outdoors in the pole vault at Saturday's Amherst Comet Relays, Westlake senior Molly Bartkiewicz had the bar raised to 12-8¼. Had she cleared that height, she would have broken the state record by a quarter-inch.

"It was really exciting to try it," said Bartkiewicz, who finished third in the state last season. "The crowd and the competition helped a lot. Everyone started clapping and they would clap faster and faster before I would vault."

Bartkiewicz said she was very close on her second attempt, but missed badly on her third try after changing poles.

"I'll keep trying," Bartkiewicz said. "Hopefully I'll be able to get it much higher."
