Indian Creek High School may soon be able to host track and field sectionals and other events.

The school board voted 5-0 last week to approve a list of items to be funded by money left over from a renovation at the middle school.

The biggest item, a refurbished track, will cost an estimated $150,000.

A new surface, along with a new pole vault area and renovated long- and high-jump facilities, will bring the track up to IHSAA regulations and put Indian Creek in the running to host sectionals or other tournaments, Superintendent John Reed said.

Exactly how much money will be left to spend from the middle school renovation project won’t be known until the entire project’s bills are paid.

The district still is receiving bills, but Reed said he is confident the district will have at least the $176,200 the board has agreed to spend.

When all the bills are paid, the board can then choose to fund other projects, he said.

The board has approved the following amounts to be spent from the contingency money:

$150,000 on track refurbishment. Bids will be in soon for the work.

Officials hope the project can begin in July, so the new track will be ready for track and field season in the spring.

$8,400 to install emergency dialer systems in each building that will automatically call the fire department if a fire alarm goes off.

$3,000 to install mirrors in the music room.

$5,000 to help the Indian Creek Middle School Student Council build a shelter with picnic tables at the school.

$1,800 to install boxes on the outside of each building that will hold keys to the facilities.

Law enforcement and fire officials will have a key to the box, so they can enter a locked building quickly if they need to.

$8,000 to put heart defibrillators in all school buildings and the administration office.
