Jordan Henry of Francis Howell North High was none too pleased last spring when he placed sixth in the pole vault at the state track and field championships in Jefferson City.
On Friday, a first-place finish plus a school- and meet-record height of 14 feet, 4 inches at the Henle Holmes Invitational at Parkway Central all but erased those memories.
Henry made his first attempt at 14-4, before going out at 15-even on three tries, but not without some excitement. He clipped the bar on the way down on his final attempt.
But it beats the disappointment of last year's state meet, when he was sixth in Class 4 with a height of 13-6. Advertisement
"The week of districts, I twisted my ankle on the approach and pretty much that whole week I was on an ice pack trying to get my foot better," Henry said. "It all starts with running, and my ankle wasn't 100 percent so I wasn't running as fast as I could and I wasn't going as high. My coach was definitely disappointed, because he and I both knew that I could have done better."
On Friday, Henry made atonement with the 14-4, breaking by an inch the 28-year-old meet record. Henry also broke his school record of 14-2 set at last year's Henle Holmes meet.
A University of Missouri-Rolla recruit, Henry has designs on the state championship that eluded him last season. "That would be awesome," Henry said.
Howell North coach Mike Parker called Henry "an exceptional athlete. We have him focusing strictly on the pole vault. He's got speed, and he can run, but we just have him concentrating on the pole vault."
