4A state track: Roseburg soph vaults to title

Clearing hurdles: Roseburg's Ben Sharp knocks down the final hurdle en route to a third-place finish in the 4A boys 300 hurdles Saturday in Eugene. Sharp finished third in the event.

EUGENE -- Adam Brink kept his goals modest.

The Roseburg High sophomore wasn't worried about the big crowds at Hayward Field, the extra competition or the added pressure of winning a state championship.

And when it came to competing in the pole vault on Friday, it showed.

Brink became the first Roseburg High track and field athlete to come away with a state title in the pole vault, winning the event convincingly with an effort of 15-feet even. That highlighted the efforts of the Indians boys and girls at the 4A state track and field championship meet at the historic University of Oregon track.

"All I wanted to do was place and do my best," Brink said. "I didn't even think about winning a state title at first."

The effort by Brink was the only state title for the Indians, who managed a seventh-place finish in the boys team standings. They met their goal coming into the meet of beating Crater, scoring 27 points to the 24.5 put up by the Comets. Summit, one of the top competitors at the Roseburg Twilight meet earlier this year, won the team title with 56 points, followed by Jesuit (49), Benson (41.33) and Sam Barlow (40).

Marshfield won the girls meet with 58 points, snapping a state-record run of six consecutive team titles by Benson. The Techsters finished second with 53 points, followed by Lakeridge (33) and Summit (30).

Roseburg's girls team failed to score during the meet.

Brink and five other competitors were left when the bar reached 14 feet. But everyone else in the field started dropping off after that, leaving Brink and Brian Singhai of David Douglas in the competition.

Brink went on to clear the bar at 14-6 on his second try. Singhai couldn't match it.

"The next thing we knew, there were two guys left," said Roseburg coach Jim Moyer, who specializes in coaching the Indians vaulters. "The other guy, his PR was at 14 feet. At that point, I knew we had it."

Never in Oregon's recorded track and field history dating back to 1927 had a Roseburg athlete won the pole vault, according to the Oregon School Activities Association. His height was the lowest needed to win the event since Justin Thompson of South Medford did it in 15-0 at the 1993 meet, but he was also one of only two individual stante champions from the Southern Oregon Conference. The other was Katelyn Van Brunt of Grants Pass, who won the 800-meter dash in 2 minutes, 14.64 seconds.

Two other Roseburg High athletes managed third-place finishes.

Ben Sharp was oh-so close to winning the 300 hurdles but fell short at the end. The Roseburg senior led the event up until the last hurdle, when he studder stepped and hit the hurdle on his way over.

That brief pause opened the door for Tyler McBee of Beaverton, who won the event in 39.14, and second-place Joe Herrle of Jesuit (39.34). Sharp was third in 39.48.

"On that last hurdle, I made a mistake and it cost me," said Sharp, who had posted a time off 39.10 earlier this season. "I was hoping to win because I came into the meet with the fastest time here. I guess it just wasn't my day today."

Roseburg senior Isaiah Smith almost managed a second-place finish in the triple jump. His jump of 44 feet, 2 inches was the second-best jump of the preliminaries, and he improved on that with a leap of 45-1 1/4 to stay in second. But Matt Lariza of Barlow overcame him in the final, moving into second behind winner Jordan Brown of Tigard (46-9) with a jump of 45-4 3/4.

Still, the placing is better than last year's 10th-place finish for Smith.

"Last year I had a lot of injuries that held me back," said Smith, who will play football at Western Oregon University in the fall. "This year, I've been trying to keep healthy. That definitely made a difference today."

In the girls meet, Katie Wilton finished 12th in the 1,500 in 4:54.04 after coming back from behind the entire field. Hayley Buckbee's put of 32-8 1/4 was good for 16th place, and Val Groshong took 16th in the discus (106-9) and 17th in the javelin (105-4).
