cross country and vaulting

Unread postby tim hutzley » Tue Aug 05, 2003 11:56 pm

Can anyone think of a good thing about doing cross country and vaulting.
I have done cross country for about 3 years and this year I dont want to do it because i think it will mess up my vault and one of my coaches thinks so too but my other coach is making me do cross country because he thinks it will be good for me. but im totaly against it.

it isnt good for u kinda why i was stuck at 14-6 in hs, not smart training! man its so hard to get out of the distance stride and back int the pole stride, its not a good idea! u do need a base but cc is not what u need to do if ur serious about the vault

at Oregon our coach will not let any of the field event guys run anything longer than a 400. for conditioning work in the fall we'll run hills, sets of 200's, or parloff's which are 10-15 100's paced at about 14-15 seconds with 30 seconds imbetween each one. Jogging is not allowed unless its the two laps to warm up! not only does it screw up your stride, but it also reduces the amount of fast muscle twitch you have, turning it into more slow, endurance muscle fibers. there are much better things you can do to get in shape and train for the vault then running cross country. cross country is counter productive to the vault.

This has been discussed ad nausium by PvJunkie in other posts. If you are strictly concerned with pv don't do X-country.

I agree w/ these guys this is my first year to not do cc and I felt alot faster on the runway, (with hard training also) I went from 14-6 last year to 16-6. So I dont think ur coach is an expert no disrespect but have him talk2 a serious pv coach

No coach can force you to do a sport you don't want to!

I did XC my senior year. I think it helped some, because I had just started track the spring before (from a gymnastics background) and I had no endurance. XC made me tougher and allowed me to get through the track workouts in the fall.

The bad thing about XC was I sprained my ankles a couple times each, which messed up my last gymnastics season, and I still have problems with them :(

So go back and read the other thread about this... basically if you really want to focus on pole vaulting, cross country is not the best choice of fall activities.

Cross Country might make you weigh less on the poles

YUCH

The only positive I see that would benefit PV from Cross Country is school team spirit and you might lose some weight and be lighter on the load of the bigger poles you can use.
Other words they might lift you faster and higher If you can still penetrate on them?
Smile
I love the PV, it is in my DNA
