
concussion ... how long will i be out?

I gave myself a concussion my senior year of HS hurdeling, it knocked me out cold, I got up not sure how much later and drove myself home(I was the only one at the track........). Anyway I missed 1 day of practice and then took it easy the weekend and was back on monday. I think it all depends on how serious it is and what you think you can do.

yea i think you're so right - there's no doubt in my mind that i'll be ok to pole vault in way less than a year - here's the thing ... you know how you have to have a physical every year before school starts - and the doctor has to sign the papers that say you're healthy for sports - well ... the doctors called my school and had the papers that make you eligible to do high school athletics in the state of florida removed from my file ... yea smart doctors lol

Whats more important- being able to pole vault for a few more years or having a normal, healthy brain for the rest of your life?
yea ... you're absolutely right! it's just hard to accept because there's nothing that i can like physically see (like a cast on a broken leg) that's keeping me from vaulting for a whole year ya know?
on another note ... i guess this would be a good time build upper body strength ... so ... any ideas as to a good program?

man im sorry about all them head problems, they sure must suck! my recommendation based off of what ive laerned from several other posts regarding weight lifting is to focus on doing a lot of work with body control and strength, i.e. spend a lot of time on a rope swing, high bar, pullup bar, etc. as far as strength exercises i would recommend sport specific ones, i.e. hand stand pushups (which are great for not only strength body balance and body control- but be careful with all that blood rushing to your head!) as well as pushups, situps, V-ups, etc. another thing- while you have a year off, do things to help your vault. for example, alst year during the off season i decided to try diving in order to help develop my body control, body awareness, and coordination (and also use it as a substitute for gymnastics which I was never in). theres all the info i can think of right now. just be careful not too spend to much time in the weight room as too much added weight will slow you down and make you less flexible. im sure robert schmitt as well as PVJunkie may have some things to say on this subject- they have provided good info on past posts regarding weight lifting in conjunction with vaulting.

haha that's how i split my chin open and got the first concussion - long story ... here's the short version - i picked up one hand to scratch my face 4 like a split second ( i don't know why i would pick my hand up when i was upside down, but i did) anyways there was a dumbbell on the ground and... last thing i remember is thinking "whoa i'm holding myself up with my left hand"

but yea i am definitely going to work on some of the stuff you mentioned ... it helped a lot - so thanks!!
