It would be a good idea to do some light swimming after weight lifting and/or a practice on the track to help loosen your muscles. But always stretch before and after. If you do swim, swim about the rate that you would do a cool down lap on the track, not too fast.

swimming and weight lifting go hand in hand. i used to workout my back really hard then go swim w/ paddles for maybe 3 to 5 hundred yards at a pretty quick pace......probably the bast lat workout ive gotten. also, after lifting legs, jumping in a pool and doin a bunch of kick and treading water as long as possible with just legs is a good complimentary leg workout that is easy on the joints but burns (in a good way) like none other.
When I trained in Phoenix during the 99/00' Track year, Sky Athletics was based at the Phoenix Swim club. The best part of my day was just after jumping, sprinting, and lifting, where we would run as fast as we could to the pool and dive in for a cool down. It has great benefits to training.

I swam all year round from the age of 8-18 and I really feel that you can strengthen muscles by swimming that you never knew that you had and that you can't really work any other way. I feel that nothing but good can come from swimming. Plus it's a great way to get in a work out if you've been having back problems, or really an other muscle/joint problems.

How many of you have had to get into Don Hood Sr.'s ice cold pool after vaulting to do drills, pool vaulting, or for your legs?!

That's Jodie!!
