we start by doing them against the wall so the weaker kids can do them too and they don't have to balance as much. If they have trouble extending, grab their legs and pull then up. (make sure girls tuck their shirts in!) Once they've all mastered the wall, we move out to doing them alone on the floor. Those that can hold the handstand them start walking on thier hands and doing pirouettes.
Here's some other handstand excercises we do:
See who can walk on their hands the farthest.
who can walk back and forth on their hands for 10 yards.
handstand pushups against the wall.
one arm handstands against the wall
backwards roll into a handstand
walk on hands sideways against the wall (facing the wall)
walk up/down stairs on hands(can't do this one yet)
we also do a related drill where we bring the HJ standards over to the front of the mats and have the kids do back rolls into handstands on the front buns, then push off and extend over a crossbar onto the ground and see how high you can push off and clear the bar.
