Curious to see what you guys think about this drill...

Unread postby birdi_gurlie » Sat Jan 10, 2009 7:15 pm

Our coach tried something new with us that we call "truck vaulting". One of the guys on our team brings his truck to practice once a week and we pull it up onto the track so that the bed is a few feet from the box [distance on the track wise, not distance from box to bed] We then open the bed of his truck and vault out of his truck...with no run, obv. [And his truck is sturdy, even when you open the bed and step on that part.] It gives us the height so we can invert but we have no momentum since we didn't run. This forces us to use our arms, but allowing us to work on inversion.

My coach stands in the bed of the truck and if he thinks we wont make it onto the mat, due to the lack of momentum, he can reach over and push us into the mat [as long as we don't let go...but with any drill you shouldn't let go until you're over the mat]

My coach said he saw immediate results from this drill. It seemed to help a lot. It also showed us some of our weak areas, especially if we have a weak upper body, so that we can work on them. Also, after we did it at the last practice, we drove the truck off the track and then really did vault...and I had some AWESOME vaults. [Though that may have been partly due because some of the guys from an opposing vault team came to practice with us...we invited them bc we're all friends...and I was able to relax more than usual. {I don't have any really close friends on our school's team...don't get me wrong, we get along and I will talk to all...okay, most...of them out of practice. But I will talk more with one of the guys on the other team rather than my own.}]

I'm just curious to see what you guys think about this drill.

You're not the first to try 'platform vaulting'. It's a decent drill because it allows for a pole to be bent without needing a run/plant (so it's less tiring). Be sure to make sure you don't get lazy during the vault though...

Also try doing jagodins from the truck and just try to stay behind the pole. That's a great drill for beginners that are just beginning to bend poles and are having trouble staying behind them.

Yeah...I found out about the "trouble staying behind them" part...I've hit it with my knee...and hit it a few times.
I really need to get used to bending the pole.
Haha, I'm not used to my pole being so thin [Its a 110lb...really thing] and when it bends slightly it scares me a lil :)

What are jagodins?
