Watch his vault from the back. He has an unusual style of separating his legs as he swings and then goes into his tuck. Can anyone explain the biomechanical advantage to this technique?

It allows him to get into a tighter tuck which means a faster rotation. Gymnasts do this all the time When doing triple backs in the floor exercise or off the highbar. Also his right leg can go on the outside of his right arm which gets his center of gravity under his hands. When he swings that leg up to meet his left leg as he shoots , then additional loading of the pole takes place.

Campare his vault with Brad Walkers and you will see that they are using the same technique.

hes also another example of a drop lead knee 6m vaulter.. how many is that now

hooker, lukyanenko, lavillenie, markov, lobinger

also does anyone know his grip? that push off looks huge!! assuming this is still a 5.0m pole (which is what he used on his 5.96), he is gripping about 4.96-97, giving him a 124 push off which is higher than any other 6m vaulter in history.

I understand the "cowboying" in the tuck. What was a surprise to me was the spreading of the knees IMMEDIATELY after takeoff. This was quite clear from the camera angle. Is this the same for all "cowboyers"? Maybe I just haven't noticed it before with others, because of camera angles. Not having personally experienced this technique, I thought you SWUNG into the cowboy tuck, rather than spreading your knees immediately after takeoff. No?

Run. Plant. Jump. Stretch. Whip. Extend. Fly. Clear. There is no tuck! THERE IS NO DELAY!

How many men are there over 6 meters now. How many did it on Spirit poles?

Off the top of my head:

Tied at 9 for Pacer & Spirit...

Pacer III: 2
Pacer Carbon: 7

Spirit built like PIII: 1

Bubka: Pacer III, Spirits (built like Pacer IIIs...dunno when/if his special build ever ended)
Gataullin: Pacer III, Pacer Carbon
Trandenkov: Spirit
Tarasov: Pacer Carbon
Galfione: Nordic
Lobinger: Pacer Carbon, Nordic, Spirit
Ecker: Spirit
Brits: Nordic, Spirit
Markov: Spirit
Hooker: Pacer Carbon
Walker: Spirit
Hartwig: Pacer Carbon
Mack: Spirit
Stevenson: Pacer Carbon
Burgess: Pacer Carbon
Lavillenie: Spirit

Tilastopaja has him listed as 176cm which is about 5'9.25". That still makes him very short for an elite vaulter!

This link gives you the actual french rankings (official webside of the french federation):

http://bases.athle.com/asp.net/liste.as ... =&frmvent=

Klick on the name of the athlete to get the data of this particular athlete. Other windows can be opened under "bilan".

He jumped both, 5,96 and 6,01, with a 5,10m pole.
