Pan Am Men - Borges 5.80, Scott 5.60, Lanaro 3rd

So we haven't truly seen my main man LZ Borges in his comfortable climate and region yet on a big scene. Do you think LZB (the nickname he prefers) can crack the 6m barrier at Pan-Ams? There is no real indoor push for Cuba in 2012 I've heard, so I think he's still full on in 2011 training. Word is he got some 5.10m poles, so if he can get them to roll over with that 4.45m+ takeoff in Guadalajara I dont think it's absurd to say we might see a 6m clearance. I hope he has a protective bag though this time. I'm hoping for an October PVSTORM!

After reading your post PVstorm I thought I'd add my own analysis. Seeing as how Guadalajara lies at 1,566m elevation, this will allow LZB to acheive the same height/velocity numbers we saw from him on the raised runways of Germany. Taking into account he has been climatizing in Habanna for the past few months should show consistancy in these numbers. Now if rumors are true and he does have a new series of 5.10 poles, we can calculate a to see if LZB will be able to achieve the level dubbed:
"Viva la Borges"

1,566m + 5.10m x the percentage of failure* (.00381) = 5.985m
-which could be rounded up in the case of great weather and strong tailwinds.

*percentage of failure was calculated using various statistics from Borges' 2011 season.
(times "viva la borges" was achieved, #of 4.45m takeoffs, ability to consume a "steiner", willingness to succeed)

Based on these numbers 6m is going to be in LZB's realm and the possibility of reaching "Viva La Borges" is very high. (no pun intended)

Yep! It was party time after that 5.80! (its no fun jumping by yourself in 15k elevation and no competition left to jump with)

Man... watching that up close was unreal. LZB will jump 6.00m... very soon.

Borges in commanding form

World Championships runner-up Lazaro Borges ended his impressive season in great fashion, claiming his first Pan American gold in a new Games record of 5.80m.

Confirmed as a winner after three clean jumps and a first clearance over 5.70m, the 25-year old went on to shatter USA’s Patrick Manson’s Games best of 5.75m by one centimetre on his third attempt. He sealed a great afternoon with a 5.80m first-time clearance.

“I am excited to have broken the record and become the first Cuban man to win the Pole Vault in the Pan American Games history. My coach (Ruben Camino) won silver in 1987 and I am happy to have bettered that today,” stated Borges, who erased the sad memory of failing to score a valid height in Rio 2007.

Jeremy Scott (5.60m) and 2007 runner-up Giovanni Lanaro (5.50m) joined him on the podium. Brazil’s Daegu finalist and defending champion Fabio da Silva was never a factor and finished fifth with 5.40m, the same height that gave him gold in 2007.
