Women vaulters take off to a different plane
Rajeev K
With the standards yet to stabilise even in Asia, Indian women have a chance to gain a continental medal in the near future.
Karamjeet Kaur started it all. She was indeed the pioneer when women’s pole vault made its debut in the country. Often competing with herself, the frail-looking Punjab woman raised the bar at a time when the event attracted attention mainly because of its novelty value.
The heights that the women sailed over looked ridiculously low then. Clear just over two metres, and one could be assured of a medal â€â€

Women's Vault in India
Good, informative article. I have a few additional marks that were not included in the progression at the end:
2.82 Kaur 2000-03-15 Lucknow
3.17 Kaur 2001-09-21 Lucknow
3.60 Solanki 2000-03-11 New Delhi
3.60 Surekha (en) 2005-05-17 New Delhi
3.60 Solanki (2) 2005-05-17 New Delhi
3.70 Surekha (1) 2005-05-17 New Delhi
3.75 Solanki (en) 2005-06-01 New Delhi
3.75 Surekha (2) 2005-06-01 New Delhi
On the other hand, I appreciated learning about Solanki's 3.35, which I didn't have in my files. I'd like to have the date and place, if anyone knows. Also the birthdates of Kaur and Surekha?
