Markov progressing well after ankle surgery

Australia's hopes of winning gold in the men's pole vault at next year's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne have soared, with 2001 world champion Dmitri Markov recovering well from ankle surgery.

Markov is already wading in the pool and riding an exercise bike.

South Australian Institute of Sport scientist Nick Hagicostas said Markov had done everything right since having a bone spur removed and the ankle joint cleaned out.

"He's in very good shape considering he's four weeks post-op," he said.

"I'm quite confident that given the six week period of lay-off of jumping, that after that he'll slowly progress and come early December he'll be ready to jump.

"I'd be quite surprised if he wasn't pretty close to his best come Commonwealth Games."
