hey,
i didn't think he was under (by much) either... just stretching to get to the takeoff... slower than he needed for his grip and/or pole and was NOT able to "punch' the Takeoff correctly..
stretching keeps the vaulter from performing the correct "Alan/bubka" model..
...and can be dangerous for even the best of the best…
dj
and yes he was very likely "under"... but the lack of impluse was a big issue... and i don't have the data or camera angle to back and "under" statement..
but seemed claer he stretched and was flat...

Re: Hooker has a close call in England
So Hooker being on 5.20 poles taking off just outside 13' (if thats what those marks are) is not under?
The deception comes in when the right should opens the impact is not as noticeable. I will bet if the shoulders would have been square when he hit it would have been every more noticeable to see how under he was.
I was still hoping the guy who was at the meet knew what he was taking off from on other jumps or was he under all meet do to the wind?

Good morning,
I edited my other post a little…
Without knowing for sure he was “under” and by how much, we can still make some obvious (logical) observations.. correct?
He looked like he stretched and was flat.. this means a couple of things could have happened. One, of course, was his steps were out at the “MID” (six step) creating a situation that he was “forced” to stretch.. he not only stepped under but slowed down in the process AND was to “flat” to impulse and takeoff correctly. This means he did not have the “force” to move his grip or pole size (regardless of what they were) to vertical. The other part of this was he was “off” from his start TOO the “MID” (six step) creating the result we viewed.
I don’t think Hooker suddenly forgot how to run (posture, pole carry, etc) we have discussed how to create proper run technique by using drills and more specifically the 20/20 drill. Try a 20/40 drill, with the pole, and see if the result is the same!
Two things need to happen. One he (we) needed to change how he started and “arrived” at the “MID” and two he must be accurate by speed and distance AT the “MID”.
What we see here is exactly where coaches and athletes (world class included) are missing the points I have tried to make on the “MID” (has to be accurate by distance and speed-that distance directly related to speed and potential grip)
I have two “combined” discussions/clinics/lectures that can only be done in person (and they are still misunderstood unless we do them “hands on” several times)
1. Why Bubka continues to hold the world record!
2. Why Americans continued to be behind EVEN with the greater emphasis (like street vaults, web.. PVP, the Summit ..etc) being placed on the vault, while other track/field events are staying at world class/world record levels!
