FORMER world pole vault champion Dmitri Markov has taken another step towards selection for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games with another A-qualifying performance at Santos Stadium yesterday.
Markov cleared 5.66m, a centimetre above the A-standard required for selection for the March Games, to claim the state championship.
The effort follows a jump of 5.65 at the Mile End track last week and will fuel his confidence for the national titles in Sydney from February 2-5.
West Australian Paul Burgess is the only Australian with a superior height this year, having cleared 5.70 in Perth on January 7. Markov hoped to better that jump yesterday but failed in three attempts at 5.76.
