Need to go up pole size

Unread postby Jungm1420 » Wed Apr 04, 2012 1:00 am

Ok so i recently started blowing through with a 13' 130 pole which i think has just turned to mush from being so old. So i got a 12'6 140lb pole to use and i even moved up from 6 left approach to 5 lefts and i am still blowing through it a little. I still had to have my standards buried at 32 1/2". Then i noticed on video that i wasnt really holding my take off position much at all today at the meet. I would start my swing up as soon as i left the ground and i was still needing the standards all the way back. I had my grip at 11'9" on the 12'6 140 pole and was afraid to move it up any because i would just get more bend out of the pole and therefore fly through even more. I definately think i need to go up pole sizes? But what should i try? I was thinking a 13' 140lb. But i only weigh like 128-130 right now.

13' 140 sounds pretty good if you are blowing through the 12'6 140. Start gripping in the same place and then move your grip up. Don't worry about using a pole over your weight. That's a sign that you are doing things right.

Hey

Logic…

The first "step' is logic… which would mean a 1335/1340.. that way the grip can go up with the stronger pole…

Swinging at the takeoff is not a bad thing… it is actually how the vault should be done… once the toe leaves the runway the swing is already in process.. the faster the swing the better.. 19 and 20 foot jumps only take 1.45 (approximate) seconds to complete.. most 14 foot jumpers are "staying" on the pole too long (ie not swinging at the takeoff) and force bending the pole.. penetrating deep because of the force bend and jumping on pole stronger than they should be jumping on….

..of course a good, high, strong plant, "impulse" plant should take place on every jump..

Poles.. moving down to the 12-7 pole probably wouldn't give you the same "feel".. so moving the run shorter on the 1330 should have been the first "move" if you didn't have a 1335/1340….

There is a "logical" progression… that was printed by Spirit some years ago.. I'll try and find that and republish it…

Some of the "logic' is this…..

1. If the pole is bending very little.. and you are going deep into the pit.. raise your grip until you are going vertical before the maximum standard depth and as the pole is reaching vertical.

2. If the pole is at maximum bend and you are going deep you must move to a stronger pole.

3. If the pole is at its maximum bend and you are NOT safely reaching the pit you MUST lower your grip until you are reaching the pit.

4. If you don't have the correct pole to move onto when you are going deep, you should first shorten your run. If that does not solve the problem and allow you to successfully jump you MUST get the next pole in sequence.

Ok so yea according to those 4 points especially number 4 i need to get a new pole. And that makes sense to not pause before swinging. I just think i am not completely powering through or extending my takeoff. I sort of get into the C position at take off but not completely. I will try and put video up as well.

Ok. So today at my meet i used someone elses pole that was 13' 135. I was using a 13' 130. The meet was in kansas so standards could only go back to 27. And even with my grip like a hand away from max grip i was hitting it off with my butt as i would extend up. I am working on getting video on youtube right now. I also seen on the video it looks like after i press up through the pole(not out- blocking out) i am not letting my left arm collapse leaving me in that L position.
