Re: Still overstriding?
What is his body weight?? He does not need to grip 4.60m to jump 5.00m!

He weighs 74 kgs. I know it's more important to jump properly, not overgripping, but still - with his speed I think a grip height of 4.60m is realistic.

Re: Still overstriding?
if he can grip 4.60 he can jump much higher that 5.00m. At 74 kg he should also be able to cope with stiffer poles. If you look at 18 year old twins Tom and Chris Lovell on the front cover of BTB - they are 5'6 and 140 lbs - and not quick - yet they are on 15/185 and 15/180 respectively clearing 5.00.
I think you should lift your sights much higher - your lad is already technically good enough and fast enough, so I suspect that you may be suffering from the fact that it is easy to settle for moderate performances when you are the biggest fish in a small pond.

Thanks for the advice, Altius. Pretty sure I suffer from that fact, yes.. I'll try to adjust the goals in relation to his potential, focus on basic skills and do not push grip height so that it goes beyond security and that he can risk injury.

Hi!
We have been working hard the last months trying to build confidence, strenght, improvements on his technique,- hopefully in the right direction. Odd has only competed once since my last post, and cleared 4.61 for a new PB. We have a couple of new poles ready for him, and I suspect we are going to reach our season goal which is 5 meters.
We are aware that there is a lot of work to do with all elements, especially with his inversion and top end, but I think his take off is a lot better now than 3 months ago.
This jump is from 4 lefts, grip 4.10:

I will implement a lot more drill-excercises in his training programme from the autumn 2012 as well as weekly gymnastic-training with professional gym-coaches.
The PB-jump: He takes off far under, and the rest of the jump is affected by that fact.

4.51 was slightly better
