Re: Joe Dial
John, we should have had this conversation yesterday. Those net bags were a great improvement, but I still missed once and broke my leg.

One word: Push-off. End of story.
Re: Joe Dial
Good morning..
Joe and Jeff Buckingham (and later on Greg Duplantis) the best "model' of their day…
I "pushed' my big guys, 6'4/6-3… to jump like the "little' guys.. I called it "ATTACK" and still use the term today.. Attack the pole and transfer as much horizontal force as possible at the take off.
Interesting story that may be a little "funny" now… but at an indoor meet Joe asked me to catch his mid check… Tully, who I was coaching and that was standing nearby, Turned and "barked" to me... "DON"T catch his mark.!!!. your working with me".. later he said "this is how I make my living and I have to win to get paid!"...
I didn't appreciate it because I always tried to help everyone and having joe "pi$$$ed at me up set me more than Tully's bark…

Re: Joe Dial
I caught Joe's poles in 1980. High School. Not because they would hit the bar.... but because he didn't want to land on them. The guy was 'out jumping his pole' even in HS
Yes, sometimes people were on the mat. LOL. But only when he was pushing it up there.... for safety(we had a crappy mat).
Otherwise we all stood pretty clear except for pole catcher.
I saw him jump into those crazy net bags of foam and marveled at his ability to shake off the wounds of that..... until we got a real mat(kind of small by today's standards).
The craziest crap I ever saw was his rope vaulting. No, not rope training.... Rope VAULTING. He did this in the gym during the fall months and I stood there on the concrete floor looking at Hercules up there in awe.

two guys with poles holding onto the bar until Joe was close. Other guy was catcher. We did it this way a hundred-hundred times.
Joe grew up in windy Oklahoma..... So I guess regardless of where he jumped, this was the model.
I remember the bar blowing off a thousand times during the run up.

Joe stepped 'deep' into it back in H.S.
I didn't have a chance to see him after 1981

Re: Joe Dial
Everyone should watch the Visions of the Vault video on youtube. That he and his family and friends recorded his evolution is quite remarkable to see. His left arm use and evolution is particularly interesting.
By gads, that low reaching back "american" carry! He must have copied Seagren and Pennel on that...
