Top Ten Vaulters of All Time

Top ten all-time pole vaulters:

1. Sergey Bubka
2. Bob Richards
3. Dutch Warmerdam
4. Bob Seagren
5. John Pennel
6. Don Bragg
7. Maksim Tarasov
8. Rodion Gataullin
9. Wladyslaw Kozakiewicz
10. Thierry Vigneron

How would each of y'alls Top Ten list be different? I think it would be easier to separate the lists into pre-fiberglass, and fiberglass/carbon era, of course, then it wouldn't be an "all-time" list. I would definitely want Hartwig and EB on there, maybe in place of Gataullin (although he was great too) and/or Kozakiewicz. Kjell Isakksson (sp) would be on my list too.

I guess the hard part is criteria though, do you base it on records achieved, Olympic or World Championship medals earned, technique, longevity in the sport, or simply height? Probably a combination of each.

I found out something intersting lately that i know someone who is related to Kozakiewicz. Just something i find to be fairly interesting, kinda a random note though. But it just shows how small of world we really live in.

Bubka - if u dont know, your on the wrong board
Bob richards - only 2 time olympic vault champion
Dutch warmerdamn - jumped 15ft or better 30 somethin times before the next person did it
Bob seagran - first indoor 17 foot vault
John Pennel - first 17 foot vault (into sawdust)
Don Bragg - all time best steel vault (15'9 i believe)
Maksim tarasov - jumped 16 when 16, 17 when 17, 18 when 18, and 19 when 19. Also a coholder of the nonbubka world record at 19'10
Radion Gataulin - another coholder of the nonbubka wr
Kozakiewicz - no idea
Vigneron - one of the technical bests, held wr before bubka, and between a couple of bubkas vaults. Jumped 19'5

if anyone knows about kozakiewicz, id be interested to know. gotta know your history

Gataullin is not the other non-bubka record holder. that man is dimitri markov. i actually saw that vault in person at the 2001 world championships in edmonton 6.05m. i still cant believe that he cleared that. it was amazing. above 6 meters a vault has to be pretty much perfect. unless you are bubka.
i wonder if warmerdam would beat bubka if bubka vaulted in the days of bamboo or if dutch vaulted on fiberglass

Kozakiewicz is only the 1980 Olympic gold medalist (from Poland). Legend has it that as he was preparing to take his last jump to secure the win, the Soviets opened the gates of the stadium which cause a huge gust of wind and it made him so mad that he charged down the runway and smoked the bar.

yeah, i knew about markov. i guess i was wrong about gataulin looking at those lists. thanks for the correction

Actually..............I would pick Gataullin over Makov every time. Makov has only been over 6.00 twice..............Gataullin 7 times and he has done it indoor and out, Markov has only done it outdoor. Of couse that could change when you consider Markov is still jumping and Gataullin is retired.

Pretty solid resume in his own right.................Dmitri still has some catching up to do.


Radion Gataullin, the double European champion (1990 and 1994), and 1988 Olympic silver medallist at the men’s Pole Vault, has also finished his career. The 37-year-old marked the end of his career at the St. Petersburg city championships during the weekend of 18-19 January 2003. However, Gataullin will stay in close touch with the sport having been appointed as National Pole Vault coach for Russia.
