ive actually had a former vaulter (David spivey pr 18 10) tell me a story about how when he went internationally to compete in europe he brought his pole on the plane, but the workers had no clue what the poles were, and they didnt fit in the cargo area. so when he arrived in europe he discoved they sawed his poles in half in order to fit them on the plane!
