buying a pole...need help on figuring things out!

Unread postby birdi_gurlie » Mon Aug 18, 2008 12:55 am

Ok, my parents are thinking about buying a pole or two and donating them to the school for my use and others use...I weigh 98 and the closest pole we have is a 125lb and it's a mystic pacer and it is REALLY stiff [even the people above 125 tried it and they don't like it]. I am just learning how to bend the pole and I am not very muscular. I have been vaulting for 2 seasons and have gotten 6'0" on a 125lb mystic pacer and a 135lb skypole [well...I think it is a skypole...I forget, but we had a 135 that was white{not altius, I don't think} or green]. When I was at PV camp, I learned how to bend the pole and I used a 90lb altius and then a 90lb mystic. I think the mystic was 12'6", not sure on the other one. I think the ones I used at camp were 10'6", but again, not sure.

I found one [a sky pole "EZ-Plant"] that sounds interesting. It is said to "Developed to meet the needs of the H.S. vaulters who are struggling to vault on a conventional pole rated at their body weight. The E-Z Plant bends easier and returns more slowly than conventional poles to allow young vaulters to achieve proper body position through each stage of the vault." but I wasn't sure if anyone knows anything about this...I've never heard about it.

I need help deciding what weight [I don't want to gain 2lbs and not be able to use the pole! I don't gain weight easily, but, like I said, I don't want to outgrow it too quickly], what brand, what height, etc...the whole nine yards. Any ideas?

Like I said, I am getting one, maybe two, depending on the shipping [if I can get two from the same company and the shipping isnt much different, so I need all the help I can get!

Your PR is 6'?

I would get an 11'110 and an 11'16 110 Mystic or Skypole, that way even if you gain a few pounds, you won't have trouble being on poles under your weight. Your 125 pole is probably at least 12' long, so when you advance past the 11'6 pole you'll probably need another one before you can get on the 125.

Yeah, my PR is 6'...but that's straight-poling it, about 7 1/2-8 feet from the bottom of a 12'6" 125. And when I was learning to bend the pole, I take off and then be like "WHOA! This is new!" and never get out of my take off position...if that helps any.

Also, have you heard anything about that skypole? It sounds kind of interesting. I mean, I'm not going to pick one because it "sounds interesting", but it would be kinda nice to know a little about it...thats the only one I haven't heard anything about. I've heard about Altius, Skypole, Pacer Mystic, Pacer FX, etc...but not an "EZ-Plant". But I haven't been able to find much about it.

The brand doesn't matter that much for you. A new Mystic will probably feel a little lighter to carry than a Skypole. I forgot, they don't make 11'6 Skypoles, so I would go with Mystic. You could also go with Altius, they are cheaper but they are a little heavier to carry.

For now, I would stay away from poles that would even come close to bending. Stiff pole for another 6 months, and then get on some poles that will wobble a little bit, probably by that time it will be what you were stiff poling with!
