This year will be my first pole vaulting year and I have a few questions.
Do u have to have special pole vaulting shoes? And if so how much do they usually cost? Please Help

IMHO, get spikes that are comfortable and wear them. If you want to look the part of a poser you can get the $90+ jump spikes every major brand makes, but they won't make you jump 1 inch higher.

Go to Eastbay.com and look at the polevault,long jump,triple jump shoes--They are $90 -$100. For my money the multi-event spikes which have some heel padding are a good bet for about 1/2 the price.

very true. i do love the poser look though and prefer the nike long jump spikes to the tj/pv. once i bought sprint spikes to jump in my freshman year in high school. avoid that unless you are sure you will never get rejected. otherwise a good multi event spike will do the trick.
also, although they should be comfortable spikes should fit nice and snug.

same as others advice- get some good comfortable spikes with a little added padding (some sprint spikes have like the thinnest, hardest, most uncomfortable sole ever-id advise you to avoid these for at least polevaulting). i got some decent black nike ones for $40-somethin, had 'em for three years. seems other brands cater to wealthy suckers to pay $50 extra for spikes that are relatively the same as any other with maybe a bit more padding and the name "pv/tj spikes". since you're new to pv'ing, i suggest scouring this message board as there is loads of useful info on almost any topic related to pv'ing, and it can really help you get a good start and avoid making many common mistakes!

Yeah, if you get the previous year's model, you get the same quality of shoes for half the price usually!

Look on eastbay under track, and go to the last pages possible, then work backwards through the pages to the front. You can find old vault/tj and LJ shoes from 29.99 and up. They are all the same shoes that are on the market right now but they are just different colors in most cases. People will pay double the price for color. One of the best shoes I have ever jumped in are the Nike TJ/PV and alot of the Elites have taken to them as well. Dickpond and First to Finish are both good dealers as well. Dick Pond is good but you need the catalog they are selling the Mizuno Vault Shoe right now for $44.95, which is also a very good shoe.
