Repositioning Height Tapes

Unread postby ClintonMagus » Fri Mar 26, 2010 9:01 am

Does anyone have experience removing and repositioning height tapes on standards? For some reason, the tapes on our school's standards were installed two inches too high (for a 12-foot bar height, the standards have to be set at 11'-10").

I would prefer to reuse the existing tapes, if possible.

They are not designed to be repositioned. It shouldn't cost too much to get new stickers, just call the manufacturer.

That's ridiculous! I would find a local print shop who does stickers and have them make some for you.

Or just remember to set the bar 2" different each time, that's what most people do. If you take the sticker off, it is unlikely to stick as well the next time. If parts of it are raised, it will probably get scraped off by the parts of the standard. It's easier to set the bar 2" different than to try to set it when there is no sticker at all!

Are you saying the bottom of your standards bases are two inches higher than the top of the stopboard of the plant box, or just that the stickers were put on in the wrong place?

At the time you measure your "12-foot bar", are the standards adjusted to the zero line? (That is, the cross bar is directly vertical from the top edge of the stopboard.)

Seems like the manufacturer should give you a replacement set for free, not charge you $70. That's a real bummer.

It's just as likely that the standards are not perfectly level with the box (as opposed to the sticker being put on wrong).

Oh you might check with other manufacturers....

These are $46 http://www.vsathletics.com/product.php? ... 1f27ef915b which still seems high, but it a bit cheaper.

I wasn't around when the pit and standards were purchased, but as I understand it, one of the former coaches put the tapes on. The bottoms of the standards are level with the box (this is a nearly-new facility). It just looks like they were put on level with the tops of the standards. If they had started at the bottom, it looks like it would be correct.

Actually, I guess I should consider myself fortunate to have found them for $70. That VS Athletics website price is for ONE standard...

In all the places I have worked I can't remember any of the "tapes" being "dead on". Could be due to several reasons. Tapes put on wrong, area where standards are set slightly height or lower than runway, bar sag, or something else. At one place, where I work a lot of meets, on some very expensive standards there were 11c not 10c between two of the "big marks" so (say) between 3.30m and 3.40m there were 11 small red lines ! This was due to the end of one tape and the start of another tape. I said to someone it is hard to believe you pay $6000 for a set of standards and the tapes are not correct. Their response was the standards might be $6000 but the person putting them together is only making $5.50 and hour! When I get to a place I set the bar to a marked height say 4.00m, measure the bar (using the competition bar), take note of how much it is off, and then during the competition just adjust by that amount. OK just my .02

WOW Dan! Do they really have a measuring device that goes 400 meters? How do you hold that up straight? (he he)
(Yeah! Like I've never hit an extra or wrong key on the keyboard) Later............Mike
