WOW!! Wouldn't have been my first choice. Try some old video of Bubka and Chad Harting, that's more ideal. Recent guys who do it right are guys like Brad Walker, he's pretty good. Of course, you have to know what your looking for. LB

If we were talking about "take off" i'd have to agree with you there. However i am a "big plant" guy and probably of a different philosophy. i think the best plant is the one in which all resistance is done at the shoulder, i.e. no bending at the elbow. both bubka and walker bend at the elbow before pushing it out again in their rock back. Hysong manages to get his chest into the jump with out bending at the elbow, something many people cannot do. it is for this reason, i believe, and his blazing speed, that he is able to jump 5.90 with no leg swing.

i hate to disagree with you though lon, cause i know you know your s***.

I would have to say what you just described is the reason hysong has no leg swing. He is never really working with the pole, in fact it looks to me like he is playing catch up the entire jump. When you see a guy like Brad, Bubka and Chad, you will see how everything is smooth and continous. Also, those guys are catching a ton from the pole. If you have too much pressure on that left arm, there will always be a point in your jump where there is a little slack. Some people pick up the slack by pulling the left arm in during the swing, and some people tuck so that they can catch the pole. Also Nick is a big push the plant out in front of him guy, so he loses a little balance on the plant, which could cause him to put more pressure than needed on that left to help him balance. I am with Lon on this one. Hope everyone is enjoying there off season.
Retain faith that you will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties.

Lon had a pretty solid plant of his own...............We come from the same school of though when it comes to the vault and Im gonna have to agree with him on this one. But Dial and Dup were pretty solid off the ground also.

Derek Miles has the best plant/takeoff phase. The intial pole hitting the back off the box and starting to bend. Look at www.stabhoch.com/ His pole starts to bend very high but the sail takes over i think.

I like Dial and Dup, those guys were awesome.

Miles is just the man.

Guru, your right about Nicks blazing speed and we are simply talking about two schools of thought. I think his big left arm is the reason his leg sucks up, it has to or his back would break at that speed. I would go into more detail but SWT hit it on the nose.

I'm not sure of a wrong or right way, its really more what suits the vaulter. LB
