DESPITE having collected Commonwealth and World Cup gold medals, Steve Hooker's achievements often have come on the same day as a better performance from a teammate who captures the headlines and limelight.

But not this time. The West Australian won the pole vault, providing the highlight for the Australians in the IAAF Golden League meeting in Paris yesterday.

Hooker, who cleared 5.70m to win the competition on a countback from Germany's Alexander Straub, was happy with the way he jumped in "tricky conditions", but believed there was still plenty of room for improvement.

"It's only my third competition, so I'm ironing out some kinks. Next week (referring to the London Grand Prix meeting) is going to be a really big one.

"London is pretty much going to be like an Olympic final. There are going to be some mind games. It will be the first time and the only time that I will meet (rivals) Brad Walker and Evgeniy Lukyanenko before Beijing."

Both athletes have jumped higher than the Australian this year, American Walker clearing 6.04m, while Russian Lukyanenko joined the exclusive 6m club, too, with a jump of 6.01m earlier this month.

Hooker's personal best is 6m. Only 14 men have cleared the height.

Fellow Australian Paul Burgess was fourth with a leap of 5.50m.
