A forum to discuss overall training techniques, nutrition, injuries, etc. Discussion of actual pole vault technique should go in the Technique forum.

Since Bubka continued doing 6 step (3 lefts for you dumb bunnies) take offs and 6 step jumps over a bar with a stiff pole after he had set many world records, I would suggest that any vaulter can benefit from short approach jumps - especially at this time of the year!!

For the old guys like Master, the numbers are just used as a comparator during the length of the season. You do want to have the highest possible height on this activity! I once heard of Kory Tarpenning jumping on a 14'160 pole from 6 step and not bending it at all. Like 7' over standing grip.

YES

look at your goals. you wanna jump up better and get your step out. these are both perfect things to correct with short run straight pole drills/jumping. the essence of change is to remove all distractions and focus on one thing at a time. its the very reason why when you learn at the very beginning you dont bend the pole!

also as far as numbers goes... i believe the goal should always be to better yourself
if your numbers get better and better as time goes on.. then you can be proud reguardless of what the numbers themselves actually are!

Numbers are a Developmental Quantification of Performance. The real question is "What does the curve look like in an athletes lifetime career?" and "Are those numbers relevant to the overall performance of an event?" Forget the terms I gave them, They were just for fun. This drill and the measurements are very important for the Petrov model interpretation here. I believe because I thought it up. Sort of.....

Find your standing grip (pole tip at you feet, reach up as high as you can and mark that place).
From 6 steps jump a straight pole to vertical landing in the pit with the body behind the pole. Keep raising your grip to the point where you can barely get past vertical while still landing safely in the pit past the box. Do not let go and fall. Measure the difference between standing grip and this place of the top hand. Here is my evaluation:
This is for Boys
>3' sucks, can't run or jump. Maybe needs to change events! LDR would be good.
3' to 4' developing, needs a lot of work
4' to 4'6" Beginner
4'6" to 5' Intermediate Takeoff
5' to 5'6" Decent high school
5" 6" to 6' Got some stuff
6' to 6'6" Now we are talking
6'6" + Ooh lalala

I'm definitely going to try and use this!

And as for straight pole drills, yes they are definitely worth it no matter what your level. If you're a beginner, it will help you develop good technique. If you've been going for a while, it will help keep your technique in line and also assist in optimizing your vault.
Hard work is wasted energy if you don't work wisely!

and I will start to post activities to improve this ability in the near future. Stay tuned people, I feel like sharing. If you have questions ask them so that a one sentence answer would be appropriate. Retiring eh. hehehehe

And Lawrence, I sent it off today. Got about 90 left. I will probably not produce them again.
