Idaho State graduate and former Pocatello resident Stacy Dragila finished second in the women's pole vault with a jump of 15 feet, 1 1/2 inches.
"It was fun to fly high again," Dragila said. "That was the most consistent set of jumps I've had in years. Having a full fall of training gives me confidence. This year, I just want to give myself a chance to redeem myself and go out with flying colors, since this will be my last year competing."

Jenn Stuczynski won the women's pole vault by clearing 15-5 1/2.
Earlier, Olympic gold medalist Steven Hooker of Australia came up short of breaking the world indoor record in the pole vault.

Hooker missed on three attempts at 20 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Pole vault great Sergei Bubka has held the mark of 20-2 since 1993.
Hooker still set a personal best by clearing 19-8?, and he accomplished it despite doing just one complete pole vault in preparation for the meet. He bruised the side of his knee when he broke a pole at a practice competition in Perth, Australia, about four weeks ago.

"He's the benchmark in pole vault, and that's the first time I've ever put the bar up to his world record," Hooker said of Bubka. "That's the first time I've felt what it's like to be attempting a height like that. And that's a good experience, particularly the first meet of the year. Hopefully, I get a few more shots at it in the coming weeks."
American Derek Miles, who finished fourth at the Olympics, was the runner-up, clearing 18-8 1/2.

Hooker can run and jump without pain -- decelerating is the only thing that hurts. So on his practice runs, he would roll onto the mat at the end instead of slowing down.
"To come out here and jump a personal best is a bit of a surprise," he said. "To have such good jumps at the world record is also quite surprising, but very exciting."

That puts Hooker and Stuczynski with the best marks in the world so far, and Dragila #3.

Anyone know what other jumpers have taken shots at 6.16 indoors before?

Lojo attempted the WR at the USA indoors in 2001 I believe. He wasn't even close.
Retain faith that you will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties.

Hooker soars to PB
02 February 2009

Beijing Olympic pole vault champion Steve Hooker has opened his 2009 campaign on the best possible note, posting a new personal best and clearing the magical six metre mark for the second time in his career at the 102nd Millrose Games in New York.

Returning to competition for the first time since that remarkable night at the Bird’s Nest in August, Hooker’s winning clearance of 6.01m was the equal sixth highest jump of all time, the highest ever indoors in the United States and the best indoors in the world for seven years.

For the first time in his career, Hooker also challenged Sergey Bubka’s long standing world indoor record of 6.15m set back in 1993.

The bar was raised to 6.16m, and despite three very close attempts and the support of the raucous Madison Square Garden crowd, the 26-year-old just came up short.

Only three men - Bubka, Russian Radion Gataullin and American Jeff Hartwig (both with 6.02m) - have jumped higher indoors.

It was a case of history repeating itself for Hooker, who also cleared the six-metre mark for the first time in his opening meet of 2008, an omen which he hopes will put him in good stead for the coming year and the IAAF World Championships in Berlin.

Although the West Australian is hesitant to pinpoint when Bubka’s record may eventually fall, this effort has given him the confidence that the elusive mark is within his reach.

“I’m really happy to have jumped a personal best at my first competition of the year,” Hooker said.

“My jump at 6.01m felt really good, and my first thought was to have a go at Bubka’s world record.”

“Given it was my first ever attempt at that height, it was a bit messy, but on my second and third attempt I felt that I was really close. All I probably needed was one more pole to have enough height.”

Hooker will next take to the runway this Saturday night at the Reebok Indoor Games in Boston, before journeying to Europe to compete in Paris, Donetsk and Stockholm ahead of his Australian competitions against Olympic silver medallist Yvegeniy Lukyanenko in Sydney and Melbourne.
