can someone please explain to me in detail how to do a press, and the purpose of doing a press?

That's a pretty vague term. Can you clarify what you mean? Are you talking about in the weight room?

A pole drill used on the mats. The vaulter basically drives into the pole and pushes through without a swing

It's gotta be...

Jagodins ('press' really isn't a good word because in insinuates that the bottom arm PRESSES the pole into a bend, which it should NOT) are a very simple drill. All you do is run, plant (from 3 lefts and out, otherwise carry the pole over your shoulder), take-off, and stay behind the pole with a strong body.

The point of them is selective repetition... You can save your strength by doing a run and jump without a swing. You learn how to run, plant (if you're far out), take-off, and most importantly STAY BEHIND THE POLE. :yes:

Yours probably won't look as cool... ;) Do more of these with stiff poles than flexible poles, and do more from short runs than long runs. :idea:

Thanks for the vid...thats the drill, a coach around here calls them presses or press outs

When you perform a jagodin you dont swing, but isn't the swing suppose to be natural and wouldn't not swinging take energy? Also, with repetition, your body's memory learns the athleitic motion to almost do it upon reflex. So in theory couldn't this drill hinder a vaulters natural swing during an actual vault?

I'm not trying to say this drill doesn't have positive contributions, I'm just pondering if there are any negative side affects. I've seen vaulters perform this drill while attempting to clear a crossbar and I know it wasn't on purpose. Could it be a side affect from this drill?

Don't worry about the natural swing... That's for a different thread. If you jump, you'll swing in a little bit, but if you just hold your trail leg back and focus on staying behind the pole, it is a pretty low intensity drill.

It's probably a side effect of an improper plant/take-off.

By pressing you want ur top arm to be above your head... The purpose of this is to get a good TALL plant... The taller you are the easier it is to push the pole to vertical. a six step run is good to start with in it teaches the start, curl press phase well and allows the vaulter to learn to run with a pole.

PP has one opinion about jagodins, and I have another. You should be told the TRUTH, not a slanted view from one person's biased view. PP KNOWS my opinion on this, yet he held it back. I'm not saying listen to me and not to him ... I'm just saying listen to both sides, then make up your own mind. But how can you know both sides if you don't get balanced reporting? Hey PP, how about a little balanced reporting from you too, eh? ;)

The second link explains why many coaches might call them 'presses' or 'press outs' or something like that. But if you take off with your elbow slightly bent out to the side and focus on pushing the pole UP then you'll only engrain GOOD habits with the bottom arm. :yes: Check out BTB2 for altius' thoughts on the drill, they are pretty much identical to my own.

Same as with a sliding box, this drill can lead to blocking with a bottom arm.

That's why it's good to do Jagodins with a stiff pole more than a flexible pole, especially when you're a beginner/intermediate! :idea:
