Willer puts together a decent jump, but misses. She is ahead on misses.

That makes 18 jumps in the competition for Natalie, including the non0-jump when the wind knocked down the bar

Shade has a good attempt but comes down on it. Her 19th jump of the competition.

So Natalie is the winner and Shade second.

Athlete Quotes - Jr. Women's Pole Vault

Natalie Willer – Winner Jr. Women’s Pole Vault

On winning the event:
“There were great conditions, and a great facility. I was really excited to jump in Eugene. Going in, I knew there were a couple of good girls I had to beat. For me it was just doing what I could to put the jumps together. I thought I would finish in the top two. I was third last year and the year before. It was really a goal of mine to finish in the top two. I am really glad I accomplished it.”

Injury keeps Roberge from competition

By John Gunther, Sports Editor
Saturday, June 27, 2009 | No comments posted.

Moriah Roberge’s night at the U.S. Junior Nationals ended before it started Friday at Hayward Field.

The former Marshfield standout rolled her ankle during warmups for the pole vault and wasn’t able to compete.

“I’m feeling fine,” Roberge said in an telephone interview after being checked out at a Eugene-area hospital.

She was disappointed to not get to compete, though, after hitting the qualifying standard for the meet while winning her second Class 5A state title at Hayward Field in May.

Roberge said her bone popped out of place, and went back in after a few minutes. X-rays were taken at the hospital just to make sure she didn’t break any bones, but she doesn’t know yet whether she suffered any ligament damage.

She expects to have an MRI done on her ankle soon, but first she’s off to visit older siblings Celina and Muriel.

Roberge said she felt great while preparing for the event. She was using a larger pole than she did during the high school season because the opening height for junior nationals was boosted to 12 feet, 51⁄2 inches, a height she had only cleared during the state meet.

“I’m sure she was unhappy to not be able to compete,” said Marshfield coach Rich “Mac” McIntosh. “Making opening height would have been a milestone for her.”

Roberge will take the rest of the summer off before heading to San Diego State University in August. She has a scholarship to compete for the Aztecs starting next fall.
