Re: USA Senior Men - Walker, Jer. Scott, Miles, Stevenson 5.75
Let's see, Derek and Jeremy were excited/relieved about making the team.
Toby was very excited and so relieved to finally be healthy again and put it together in a meet.
Brad feels pretty good. said he's as healthy as he's been in a long time. He's going to get treatment in California for a month before heading to Europe.
Looked like Runnerspace and FloTrack got interviews with Brad. The other three came through when there were a lot of distance athletes being interviewed, so I don't think anyone got to them.

Bella Vista High School graduate Derek Miles tied for second with Jeremy Scott in the men's pole vault final to qualify for the world championships. Miles and Scott jumped 18 feet, 10 1/4 inches, as did winner Brad Walker and fourth-place finisher Toby Stevenson. The number of misses determined placings.

Brad Walker wins men's pole vault by clearing two bars
by Ken Goe, The Oregonian
Saturday June 27, 2009, 9:37 PM
Thomas Boyd/The OregonianBrad Walker was in his first pole vault competition of the season Saturday at Hayward Field.
EUGENE -- Brad Walker hadn't vaulted this season before showing up Saturday for the USA Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.
And he didn't vault much Saturday, either.
Walker cleared just two bars, but that was enough to win the pole vault with a mark of 18 feet, 10 1/4 inches.
Jeremy Scott, Derek Miles and Toby Stevenson also had best clearances of 18-10 1/4, but Walker won on fewer misses.
Rick Bowmer/The Associated PressWalker was among four vaulters to clear 18-10 1/4.
In fact, the U.S. record-holder didn't miss an attempt until he missed three at 19-2 1/2. In all, a pretty good day for a guy who has been nursing a tender back.
Later this summer, Walker said, he figures 6 meters, or 19-8 1/4, will be within reach.
"I think I can jump higher than six meters this year," he said. "No question in my mind."
His U.S. record is 19-9 3/4. But those kinds of marks are for the future. In this one, Walker shortened his approach and figured he did what he could do.
"I thought 5.75 (meters, or 18-10 1/4) was good enough to get the win," Walker said. "That was all I was looking for."
Tommy Skipper, the five-time NCAA champion from Oregon, still is looking for a clearance.
Skipper has been staying under the radar since no-heighting at the 2008 Olympic trials.
He entered the competition Saturday with the bar at 18-2 1/2, ran through his first two attempts and missed badly with a third. After the competition, Skipper did not appear in the mixed zone to talk to reporters.

Re: USA Senior Men - Walker, Jer. Scott, Miles, Stevenson 5.75

The pole vault is the wild, wild west of track & field. Athleticism plus the strategy of chess, or perhaps, today, five card stud. Walker, Scott, Miles and Stevenson all cleared 5.75m or 18-10.25. It was their attempts and failures up to that put three of the four on the Olympic team.
In the end, Brad Walker, won, as it took him two clearances and no misses to get to 5.75m. Jeremy Scott had more clearances on less attempts than Derek Miles. Toby Stevenson, the helmeted one, just had some back luck, with more attempts than Miles and Scott.
Brad Walker, the American record holder, Hayward record holder, defending World champion, won on Saturday. Here is how he put the event i perspective:
“I came in knowing I had the bye to the Worlds being the defending World Champion so I wasn’t pressed, I wasn’t stressed. I thought everyone would clear 5.70 but I thought I had a good chance to win at 5.75.”
“I was coming off a short approach so I wasn’t close to being at 100-percent of what I can actually jump. I know I can jump significantly higher but I didn’t want to push the approach.”
"I think my next meet will probably be in London, then possible Monaco and one or two other meets to get ready for the World Championships.

I was excited to find such great coverage of this meet posted online. Thanks to Becca for the live updates and thanks to Richard Stark for posting the video footage...I almost felt like I was at Hayward watching this
