Re: Summer break...
Okay.
Yeah...one of the coaches said it was hard and I looked at her kind of strange...I don't think she's the highbar coach.
I think I'm doing it...I'll have to add a video up soon of me doing it...I haven't videotaped in a while.
I've been trying but I'm not 100% sure.
And the kip was kind of hard...I'm 5'3" and they were trying to teach me on the bar which was at about 5'4"-5'5"...but the bar was about 2 inches thick so it came to about 5'3" at the lowest...it was hard to get my feet off the ground and under in time. I think I'm going to find out which coach does the bars and see if that one can help me the next time I go. Hopefully.

If you're whipping at the bottom of your swing, you'll know it. You'll feel the sudden force of the whip ... and you'll feel your trail leg just magically "popping" up after the whip ... without much effort at all.

You can do a kip on a highbar that's too short for you, but you can't do the whip swing on a bar that 's too short for you.
On the kip, arch your back (and even lift your legs back a bit if you have to) as you swing forwards. This will keep your feet from scraping on the mat. The rest is easy!
On the whip swing, you should be emphasizing a fully stretched trail leg as it passes below the highbar. So if the highbar's too low, this will make it impossible to do it right. If it's just when you point your toes, then you could refrain from that. But if you're already refraining from pointing your toes and you're still hitting the mat, then you need to either raise the bar or remove the mat that's directly under the bar.

Re: Summer break...
The biggest thing is figuring out HOW to do the kip. I know you can do a kip on a bar shorter than you, it's just the figuring out how to do it that's the problem.
And I'll try to get videos of how I'm [attempting] the whip/tap swing.
Also, does anyone know how to tape a torn callus if it's RIGHT under the middle finger? i've tried putting a special "knuckle" bandaid on it [didn't work], I put a pad on it with ointment and two strips of tape around my hand and two smaller pieces to form an "x" over it that goes through my fingers...I've tried the aforementioned method, except the strips only went on my palm...nothing's working. Any ideas? [BTW...I'm not taping as if I'm going to vault or do high bars or something...Ill tape it for that when I actually do that...I mean to keep the bandaid with ointment on without it slipping OR the tape coming undone after a few hours.]

All the words in the world can't explain it. You need to watch someone do it, then copy them. Rather than watching vids (which will help), it's better for someone to SHOW you how to do it, and then give you instant feedback when you try it.

I learned to kip (not well, mind you) in a matter of days... I think about 3. All you need is persistence and a good video model.

[quote="powerplant42"]BG, I'll say this one more time, then I'm done:
FORGET ABOUT STRENGTH TRAINING AS A FOCUS. Just jump on a high bar or go to the track instead.

At camp, Altius said I'm the exception and that I NEED to hit the weight room for a little while. I'm still going to do the sand drills and 20/20s and such, but I'm hitting the weight room too. I'm going to do what I can NOT in the weight room [high bar, sand pit drills, take off drills, running drills, sit ups, variety of crunches/abs, and push ups. But I'm hitting the weight room a bit.] 2-3 times a week, preferably. About an hour each time. Free weights, mostly. Builds the stability muscles up. Squats, bench, a variety of other things. I'm GOING to do the other drills, but the power/strength is holding me back a bit.
OOOO....AND I LEARNED HOW TO DO A HANDSTAND!
Not terrific and not for very long, but it's getting there.
And I managed to convince my mom to hopefully bring my pole to the beach for sand drills and such

Re: Summer break...
I'm starting to get sick to my stomach by what some people are saying on this thread. Everyone has individual and different needs to get better in the vault. Its more about what is limiting you most- technical parts, physical parts, etc, and since you can do tons of vaulting and lifting at the same time through the season, you should! Especially for young athletes that still have quite a while to go in developing physically.
PP.... im not really sure why you are coaching athletes at this stage in your life. But stop writing like you know so much that you get irritated by explaining it all the time like altius did, because you and I both know that you will still be on here giving advice to people jumping not much longer than you have every single day.

If not me, then who?
Surely, people need to step up. I do what I think is right.
In retrospect, perhaps I was wrong in BG's case.
I applied a generally agreed upon concept to an individual case according to the knowledge that I had of the case's specifics. Altius, I know, had an incredibly higher knowledge of the case having seen BG in person. However, I was not totally in the dark as you might think.

People can't step up if you are always butting in and getting the first and last word about everything. It's better to not say anything when you don't know, and the problem is you don't know half as much as you think you do. BG has posted multiple videos on here, and it was obvious that her overall athleticism was holding her back as much or more than her technique.
PP, you need to spend more time focusing on getting yourself healthy, and listening to other coaches, rather than trying to tell everyone else what to do.

If I am to make mistakes, as is everyone's nature, is it not better to make them where there are others to correct them?
Thus is the nature of learning.

Re: Summer break...
Thats like saying a pre-med student would be better off performing surgery with other surgeons "looking on and correcting" as he/she performed surgery. Thats no education at all, and they rightfully know that the fastest way to learn is to watch, until you have watched for years and are ready for a residency. An education is not a guess-and-check kind of deal. Its the same with the vault, because providing too much information just confuses vaulters as to what they should do. They dont know who you are or who's credible, and when they hear 10 different things to work on its difficult to figure it out. I dont want to sound like a hypocrit so i will say that i always try to be careful with what i say, but when i might be out of line i completely welcome a slap to the face to wake me up as well. I dont know 10% as much as i hope to one day know about the vault. Change to an open attitude like that and others attitudes toward you will change along with it.
Enjoy your hiatus. I know i will.
