Interestingly enough there are not to many collegiate meets that hand out metals... But when they do, it definitely means something special...

Dad, that's understandable, but you need to relax and leave your son in his coach's capable hands.
Perhaps change your expectations to match those of your son and his coach ... cheer for him to "get a medal" at CONFERENCE ... not at every meet?
And don't worry ... to medal at conference, he's bound to get a few PRs along the way!

It's tough for a college freshman male to PR their first year of college, especially when they had a fairly high PR in high school. There are a lot of adjustments for the body to make. It's definitely not realistic to expect him to PR every meet, especially since he's not going to be winning very many meets, so it's not like he'll have many opportunities to set the bar 1cm above his PR. Plus, if he is winning, they'll probably push the bar straight to NCAA qualifying heights.
What you should see is improvements on physical tests, improvements in grip efficiency, and hopefully more consistent jumping at higher heights. If he can make 4.90 regularly, maybe 5.05 or 5.20 sometimes, that will be a fantastic start for a college freshman with a 16' HS PR.
Heck, if he gets just stronger, faster, more technically sound, and stays healthy all year, that will be a good start.
