This is a forum to discuss advanced pole vaulting techniques. If you are in high school you should probably not be posting or replying to topics here, but do read and learn.

2 videos 4 years apart....not a very stong case.

At what point do you credit the vaulter and coach for hard work and dedication to achieving lofty goals. IMHO it is a weak person who blames the equiptment. I slice a golf ball a lot....so it must be the clubs.

hye

the point is .. which technique was she "coached" to follow?.. which "technique" was learned first? and why was there a change?

i can't "make" you believe or understand that the pole pattern makes a difference....

but poles are marketed and used because the seller and the user "thinks" there is something in the pattern, strength or bend capabilities that makes it better?

it is very difficult to argue one point without considering the other!! that the same qualities that make it "different" are the same qualities that make the vaulter change what we call "technique" or there vault "model".

Here is with double leg swing, taken from now "famous" 5.61m from 8 steps video just month ago:

He certainly did not start working on swing change in few recent weeks - it is a long process. As Altius and Barto noticed, he should go back to double leg swing in Doha if he doesn't feel 100% comfortable.
It will be interesting to see if Steve will switch completely to single leg swing or this is just experiment. If he do that and jump higher (I mean WR, not 1-2 cm higher than PB), this could be the end of all discussions about single-leg double-leg swing.

"i can't "make" you believe or understand that the pole pattern makes a difference...." I certainly dont pretend to be an expert on pole patterns - all I can say is that never -in any other discussions I have had with coaches of the calibre of Petrov,Parnov, Stewart, Rippon, Botcharnikov or Bagget - has any of them mentioned it as a factor to be considered. Mayhap your are correct dj but most folk dont seem to feel that way.

Nice example of Hooker holding the knee up at Commonwealths. There was another video of the full comp that I can't find on youtube, i have on my hard drive will have to post it.

Steve is using Carbon's here, doesn't seem to affect the knee dropping!!!!

Steve is gonna go big soon

Well i think, (doesn't mean i'm right), that if Steve Hooker drops his knee and can get back in time to cover the pole then i think he could potentially get on bigger poles thus allowing him to jump higher. he jumped his pr with dropping his knee, and like altius said don't practice other techniques (correct me if i'm wrong) . I think Steve should stick with dropping the knee because that is how he has had his greatest success. changing back and forth will just add more variation to an already very technical event. the Leg drop can be very beneficial if done correctly. its the done correctly part that is the issue.
