Hope all is well and you have a speedy recovery. I have seen this happen on a variety of brand poles, carbon and non-carbon.

I have seen two of the weaves break this year in college meets. In half. Must be something to that.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Sports 10 has learned that Indiana State women's track & field star, Kylie Hutson, will miss this weekend’s Missouri Valley Conference meet, but will be back for the NCAA championship in June.
There was concern that Hutson's pole vaulting career at ISU could be over. On Friday, the former Terre Haute North and ISU senior suffered a major hand injury at the Billy Hayes Invitational at IU when her pole broke during a vault. The injury was so severe, Hutson had to get stitches in her hand.
Sports 10 has learned Hutson is havng a protective glove made for her hand, which should allow her to defend her NCAA outdoor National championship in pole vault.

Re: Kylie Hutson, Indiana State 4.51m WL, breaks pole, rips hand
Becca,
Talking with people at Gill today they do as well as I feel that she pushed the pole to its limit. Over bent maybe! To its limit yes!
She had two decent jumps (not great, not bad) on her first two attempts at 4.61m. On her second attempt she was on at her Mid mark and under her takeoff mark due to her reaching, more than likely this was because she was running out of gas and was getting tired. On her third attempt she hit her mid mark but was still under about a foot at takeoff. This bent the pole to its limit and it broke. Now why did this happen? I believe there was a few reasons why. One, she was tired, we all know that when vaulters start to get tired they tend to reach for the takeoff. Two, she had a great tail wind pushing her down the runway. Third, everyone in the stadium was watching her and she was pumped. Fourth, was the fact it was her last attempt at the collegiate record. I think all of these combined caused her to be “under” at takeoff and therefore breaking the pole.
Gill makes great poles and in no way am I placing any fault with them!
I know that Kylie is thankful for all of the nice thoughts and kind words that all of you have given her. I will keep you guys updated on what is going on! Thanks…

i have a teammate who jumps on the weave poles.. he has broke 2 this season.. I figure being under is a common occurrence in this sport. I've seen many poles loaded beyond what she has on her break... just sayin
It's just you and the bar

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State pole-vaulter Kylie Hutson emphasized the “good news” part of her good-news, bad-news weekend in Bloomington when contacted by the Tribune-Star on Tuesday.
The bad news, as many Wabash Valley fans know by now, is that Hutson injured her left hand when her carbon pole broke Friday. She was attempting to set a collegiate women’s record of 15 feet, 11⁄2 inches and it was the second time during the Billy Hayes Invitational that she broke a pole.
“When it broke [for the second time], my skin ripped open from the force and vibration of the pole breaking,” Hutson explained.
“To me, it sounded like a gunshot going off. I remember looking down at my hand and seeing blood just gushing out… It was just an awful feeling, knowing my college career might be over.”
More bad news is that the injured Hutson will not be able to compete in the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend at Illinois State.
“We know for sure that Kylie will not be ready to vault this week,” said John Gartland, Indiana State women’s track and field coach. “This will be a huge blow to our MVC efforts. Not only will we miss her automatic 10 points, she makes our other vaulters and the rest of the team better by her presence. We will miss her greatly this week.”
“It’s definitely gonna be a tough one to miss, but there’s nothing I can do about it,” Hutson acknowledged. “But I’m going to be there to cheer my teammates on and hopefully one of them can take the title this year.”
The Sycamores’ senior described her injury in as much detail as a non-medical professional could.
“There’s about a 6-centimeter laceration from the back of my hand to the center of my palm,” she said. “It makes it easier for me that it’s my left hand instead of my right. There’s no tendon damage or nerve damage. There will be no surgery, which is great news.”
Ahh, there is good or “great” news after all.
“I get the stitches out in one week,” Hutson revealed, “and I should be able to put a pole back in my hands a few days after that.”
“The really good news for Kylie and all for us is that the specialist she saw [Monday] thinks that she will be able to vault in 21⁄2 weeks at Greensboro, N.C., in the preliminary round of the NCAA championships,” Gartland said. “That’s not for certain, but it gives us some hope and we are very relieved that she is going to vault sometime again.”
Also last Friday, Hutson established a collegiate-leading and world-leading height of 14-91⁄2. The collegiate record is owned by Chelsea Johnson of UCLA at 15-1, which was established at the Pac 10 Championships on May 14, 2006. Amy Linnen of Arizona has the best indoor vault and the second best overall at 14-101⁄4, with Hutson tied for third overall with Thorey Elisdottir’ of Georgia.
Hutson broke her first pole — for the first time in her career — on her second attempt at 14-31⁄2 Friday. She could have stopped there, having already won the competition, but she decided to continue on with a new pole. She easily cleared the height on her final attempt and cleared 14-71⁄4 on her first attempt.
Then the bar was raised to 15-11⁄2 and Hutson had two solid attempts but didn’t quite clear the bar. On her final attempt, Hutson was under her takeoff mark, which created excessive stress on the pole and caused it to break.
“My step was under on the first [break] and that caused the pole to overbend,” Hutson recalled. “On the second one, it kinda did the same thing and my legs were getting tired … and it just snapped.
“I think I did a complete back flip and landed on my hands and knees on the mat. When the pole broke, I was completely upside down and my momentum carried me onto the mat.”
Fans can see the dramatic video of Hutson’s second pole break on YouTube.
Back to the good news, the hand specialist told Hutson that she should be able to compete in time for the NCAA preliminary round in three weeks. A special protective glove is being made for her in Indianapolis.
“I know that Kylie will be with us this week to help support teammates and we wish her the best as she continues to heal and gets ready for the NCAA championships,” Gartland said.
The NCAA preliminary round is an extension of the NCAA championships. In past years, athletes needed to meet provisional qualifying marks to compete in one of the regionals. This year, the NCAA will conduct two preliminary rounds at two sites, one in North Carolina and the other in Texas, where the top 46 competitors in each event will compete at each region in the first two rounds. The top 12 individuals will advance to the NCAA championships.
To defend her NCAA championship, Hutson must survive the preliminary round and be one of the 12 advancing from the North Carolina Regional.
A former Terre Haute North High School standout, Hutson has won seven straight MVC championships in the women’s pole vault. She owns the ISU and MVC records for indoors (14-9) and outdoors (14-9 1/2) and the MVC championships records for indoors (14-8 1/4) and outdoors (14-1 1/4).
A four-time All-American, Hutson is the defending NCAA outdoor champion and won NCAA indoor championships in 2009 and 2010.

Re: Kylie Hutson, Indiana State 4.51m WL, breaks pole, rips hand
Why change it if it is not broken. Gill went off and created these new poles that break more often than the old fx carbon. Why? The number one pole vaulter in the world jumps on the old FX carbon and probably will never jump on the new weave, is that not a little weird? They had a great pole in the Carbon fx, It was light, reliable, a little fragile but no like these weave poles. I know they just added a layer of S glass to the weave pole so they would not break but that now just makes them heavier, as a matter a fact I think they are heavier than the Carbon FX, makes no sense at all. I say go back to the Carbon FX and get rid of the fragile weave that is now heavier than the Carbon fx poles because of the layer of S glass that was added to make them safer.

Darth Vaulter wrote:How did the cut occur? It doesn't look like there was a break in the hand hold area of the pole. I've had a sore hand from breaking a pole as have a couple of my vaulters. I've always assumed this was from the sudden release of all of the energy stored in the pole, but I've never heard of a deep cut like this one.
Actually, if you step frame by frame in the video that RainbowGirl links to below (it's a quicktime video, so use your left and right cursor keys), it initially breaks in two places: right in the middle, and also just above her left hand.

Re: Kylie Hutson, Indiana State 4.51m WL, breaks pole, rips hand
the best way I have found to see the pole break is to view it backwards. It breaks in the middle and then then recoil of the release breaks it down closer to the ground and then snaps out of the box. If the vibrations from the release is enough to break the pole and she has a tight grip with and of skin folded over its self then it would be enough to rip the her hand.
can you still order the old carbon fx from gill?
