Pole vaulter Isinbayeva out of Lucerne meet due to hand injury
(AFP) – 2 hours ago
LUCERNE, Switzerland — Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva pulled out of Thursday's Lucerne athletics meeting due to a hand injury.
After several training jumps, Isinbayeva, who has set 27 world records in her career, announced to the crowd that she was injured and would therefore not be competing.
"I hurt my hand while falling, I will be unable to jump. I really regret having to pull out and I will return next year," Isinbayeva was quoted by the Swiss news wire ATS.
The 29-year-old, who has suffered a series of setbacks in the last two seasons, was scheduled to compete as part of her preparations for the August 27-September 4 world championships in Daegu, South Korea.
Isinbayeva became Russia's best known sportswoman by winning Olympic gold in Athens and Beijing and lifting the world record to well above five metres.
On Saturday, she had defied strong winds to clinch victory in her first outdoor meeting of the season in Heusden in Belgium.
She recorded a modest winning effort of 4.60m, way below her world record of 5.06m set in Zurich in August 2009.

Happened first jump of warm-ups, she got stood up and bailed to the left front bun. Then lost her footing and came back onto the track/grass, textbook biff. Did look like it really hurt though.
"P" to tha mutha "V" "Dude, you going to the store?"
