Everything Olympic Trials
I will attempt to keep this up to date as to the qualifying rules and who is qualified.
First, you need to qualify for the Olympic Trials.
There is an Olympic Trials A standard and a B standard*.
Men: 5.70/5.50
Women: 4.50/4.30
As best I can interpret the rules (will update if I get any clarification) outdoor PV marks are good from 5/1/11-6/17/12. Indoor marks are good from 1/1/12-6/17/12.
Athletes with the A standard automatically get to compete. Athletes with the B standard are selected until the field is full. The field size for the men's and women's pole vault has been set at APPROXIMATELY 24 athletes. This is not a minimum size. If there are 22 men at 5.51+ and 6 men at 5.50, they can exclude all of the 5.50 men if they choose. They have been known to take athletes who are below the B standard if there are less than the field size. NO GUARANTEES though, and this is unlikely to happen in an Olympic Year.
*The following types of athletes automatically qualify for the Trials:
(a) During the current or four previous calendar years, earned an individual
medal in track and field in an Olympic Games or in an IAAF World Indoor
or Outdoor Championship.
(b) Is the reigning USA Indoor or Outdoor champion.
(c) Has a World or Olympic ‘A’ Standard that would apply to the current
championship team selection.
(d) Finish as one of the top three at the preceding year’s corresponding national
championship (Indoor qualifies for Indoor, Outdoor qualifies for
Outdoor).
This means the following people are automatically qualified:
Men: Derek Miles (USATF Champ, OG A standard), Jeremy Scott (USATF #2, OG A standard), Nick Mossberg (USATF #3), Mark Hollis (USATF Indoor Champ), Brad Walker (OG A standard)
Women: Jenn Suhr (many reasons), Chelsea Johnson (09 WC silver, has since retired), Kylie Hutson (USATF #1), Lacy Janson (USATF #3), Mary Saxer (OG A Standard), Becky Holliday (OG A Standard)
More info here: http://www.usatf.org/events/2012/Olympi ... ndards.asp
So you've qualified to the Olympic Trials. Congratulations! Now to make the team…
There are separate Olympic Games A/B standards:
Men: 5.72/5.60
Women: 4.50/4.40
The team makeup is different than Worlds. There are no A/B combos. You can take A or AA or AAA or B. If you take AAA, the alternate has to have an A as well.
The qualifying window is 5/1/11-the Trials. USATF will NOT allow any mark chasing.
I assume they will go by order of finish at the Olympic Trials and will fill the fields as best they can. There are already 3 or more men and women with the A standard, so the B standard doesn't matter, there's basically no chance a B standard athlete will make the team in the pole vault.

I'm quoting from the USATF Rule Book, not the meet entry guidelines. The meet entry page just refers to Rule 8, so I copied and pasted the actual rule, which applies to more than just the Trials.

Re: Everything Olympic Trials
I recently spoke with Mitch through the postal service. He is not seeking citizenship at the moment and is in Switzerland under political asylum. He wasn’t sure if he would be able to make it back to the States for the trials (said it was “complicated”) but stated he still wears the ole red white and blue undershorts.

Apparently he is now also into wingsuit flying. There are a lot of places in Switzerland where you can do this. A friend of mine posted a video where you can see him getting ready for the Swiss Alps.

Sure, I will try to update the list.
The USATF lists say they were updated 4/12/12, so if you know of a mark earlier than that, you should email stats@usatf.org
