Ok. So Charlie posted in the coaches forum that he would coach any guy that could grip 16'6 or any woman that could grip 14'6 and have them jump over 19' and 16' in 8 weeks.
I usually try and stick up for people when they get picked on but this is a bit much
1) You posted in the COACHES FORUM! No one could really answer you anyway that is not a coach..
2) If you coach someone that grips 16'6 for 8 weeks and they start jumping 19' then you are the worst coach on the planet. The majority of the guys on the planet gripping 16'6 are already jumping that high if not higher. I think Kendrick was using a 15'7 pole when he went 5.60 last week and has gone 19' before. And I have seen guys with 14' grips jump over 17' so the 14'6 over 16' is not too impressive either.

Fortunately, at 70 years old, and being an ex Marine, I have a pretty TUFF skin. Plus I don't let other peoples opinion of me hold ANY credence, and by the way, where are all these 19 footers? It's ironic to me that 20+ was cleared 20 years ago and nobody's came close since!

There only a handful of 19 foot vaulters in the world today. My son has been tested 3 times in the last 6 months by USADA. He only vaults 5.65 to 5.70 on a good day. It is to hard to cheat these days. Ask Gay, Powell and others.

Re: Charlies Challenge
I read all of this and it drives me nuts. just because we don't have any vaulter going above Sergei record does not mean that they are not great vaulters or that they don't have great coaches. It just goes to show how unique and great of an athlete Sergei was. It is true that records are meant to be broke but not every day. I am sure that if I or any of you had Sergei then we would be the talk of the town. I would like to think that we are all getting our vaulter to achieve their full potential, even if that potential is only 11',12',13', etc. I worked with a coach who like to say (you can't win the Kentucky derby with a draft horse you need a thoroughbred), so we do the best we can for the love of the sport and the love of the Athlete we coach until the day that thoroughbred show up again. So can we use this web sight for what it was meant for, like passing on info and trick of the trade to help each other in our effort, is that to much to ask.

There are many world records that haven't been broken for about as long. Are the other event specific weirdos like us saying the same things?

Re: Charlies Challenge
Where are all the 19 foot vaulters? I feel like you discredit the sport by making it sound too easy.
Your point is true, grip 16'6 and you will probably jump close to 19'. Guess what though. Gripping 16'6 is not easy! That is about what Renaud grips and he is jumping 6.04 right now. And guess what, Renaud is faster than 99.9% of pole vaulters that are currently jumping.

Re: Charlies Challenge
Grip it and rip it!!!
I'm going to trump Charlie's challenge by more than a foot!
Give me a vaulter that can hold a 17-10 grip, and after training with me for 8 weeks, he will clear 20-4 (6.20m).
GUARANTEED!!!

Re: Charlies Challenge
I am presently coaching a beginner - a 12 year old girl - now coming up to twenty sessions and she will jump 9'9" plus in March - I hope. This is MY real world of coaching - but I think she will jump at international level eventually.

Re: Charlies Challenge
How about a 10 year old 7 sessions --weighs 55lb.--4'8" tall 10'70 Altus---9' grip--clear 9' with a bar!!!!

I'd say that's pretty damn good, Charlie!!!
In comparison, I was 15 years old before I vaulted that high!
Good for you for coaching this young guy!
