As boisky mentioned, Renaud made 6.16m his first time ever using a 5.20 13.8

Possibly, the damage done might be bigger than expected:

After failing at 6,21 does he have visible pain. When he takes his shoe of, is there blood on his socks, and they seem to be assessing the damage.
It looks like he misses the box, or the pole sticks high on the backplate.

Re: RENAUD LAVILLENIE WORLD RECORD 6.16!!!!!!!!!!!
According to L'Equipe newspaper Lavillenie will not take part in any of his planned schedule until the world indoor championships hoping to speed up the recovery process.
There were only the French indoor championships and possibly a national competition by then... He sure will not be the next annual French champion in two weeks. Since yesterday, who cares ?
For the next World indoor championships, he told to be there, even on a single leg... let's wait...

He did not sleep since his record. Needs to have a break.
He tells that all the things have been there at the right time.
"No limits" he tells. 2/3 cm to gain immediatly. 6.20 is my aim now.

For remember, he got back in 2012 with a broken bone in his hand, and though made it. He just talked about this occurence so to convice himself to do the same thing this season. For him and us, 10 days to wait....

Re: RENAUD LAVILLENIE WORLD RECORD 6.16!!!!!!!!!!!
In the vid that Golfdane posted, you could see that he was off to the right side quite a bit (missed the coach's box entirely) on his first clearance at 6.76, then had nice landing position on his 5.91 (centre of CB). On his 3 attempts at 6.01 (clearing the 3rd one), he was again off to the right side, landing on the outside edge of the CB. He got good distance on all 3 of these jumps, so his decision to move up a pole was a good decision, paying off bigtime. On his WR 6.16, he landed in the center of the CB.
I am most concerned with what happened on his one and only 6.21 attempt, where he sprung quite a ways backwards down the runway, landing just to the side of it feet-first, injuring his ankle. This could have been a lot worse! It was very strange to have such a perfect WR vault, and then immediately follow it with such a nearly-catasrophic vault.
I think this goes to show that you never know what might happen, no matter how experienced the vaulter is. THIS IS THE REASON FOR THE BEST PADDING POSSIBLE AROUND THE BOX, AND ALONGSIDE THE RUNWAY! It would not surprise me if they start putting mats alongside the runway as far back as he was flung. They would not need to be thick - they could be the same thickness as the box collar, and made of comparable material.
Like I said, it could have been a lot worse.
In hindsight, he probably should never have taken off, and probably should not have even tried a 2nd WR attempt.
