Meet of Champions: Union Catholic underdog Andrew Ghizzone prevails in pole vault with No. 2 mark in meet history

Andrew Ghizzone had a personal best of 14-6 in the pole vault coming into the NJSIAA/Star-Ledger/M-F Athletics Meet of Champions yesterday, but that did not stop the Union Catholic star from topping the field and recording the second-best vault in meet history and the seventh-best mark in state history.

The University of Colorado-bound senior cleared 16-0 at Frank R. Jost Field in South Plainfield and was just short on his three attempts at 16-4 1/4 in an attempt to break the meet record of 16-4 set by Millburn's Will Nesbitt in 1980.

The personal record and surprise victory was quite a performance for an athlete who has made his mark on the track.

"It is definitely the best feeling when you're an underdog and you come in a foot below the best height and you PR by a foot and a half," Ghizzone said. "It's an amazing feeling, I definitely didn't think I would win. I gave myself a 28-percent shot."

He cleared 15-9 on his third attempt and 16-0 on his first to tie the Union County record, which was set by Dan of Heyburn of Cranford in 1980. He was the only vaulter over 15-6.

Less than 45 minutes later, Ghizzone split a 1:56.1 to lead off the 3,200-meter relay. Earlier in the day, he went 54.65 to tie for seventh in the 400-meter hurdles.

"He may be the best all-around performer in the state," Union Catholic coach Mike McCabe said. "He had really good jumps at 15 (feet) last week, so we thought he could at least go 15, and then he just caught fire. It was almost like he ran out of poles there."

Ghizzone also is the Union County champion in the mile.

"To be just a vaulter is really cool, but to do all those other things is what makes the sport fun," Ghizzone said.
