Let me start off by sending out congratulations to all the
competitors today. Yall did a fine job and we're sending a heck of a
team to Athens. What a show you put on today
The opening height was 4.20m 13'09.25 it was relatively ineventful
save for the 3 failures of Becky Holliday. 4.30m 14'01.25 knocked out
Akron grad Kira Sims and Purdue grad Elizabeth Metzinger. Arizona's
Amy Linnen was knocked out at 4.35m 14'03.25
At 4.40m 14'05.25 we saw a REAL shocker - they even showed it on the
broadcast. Kellie Suttle absolutely SHATTERED her pole on her first
attempt - I tried to count the pieces using slow mo on my VCR - I saw
at least 4 pieces not incluing the plug that shot out. She gutted it
out and while she missed her first attempt (the retry) she sailed
over on her second. Jillian Schwartz, Tracy O'Hara, April Steiner and
Mary Sauer all remained with perfect records after first attempt
makes. Lindsay Taylor also made it on her first but was behind due to
a few earlier misses. UCLA soph Chelsea Johnson needed all three
attempts but stayed in the game. Stacy Dragila, Andrea Dutoit and
Alicia Warlick all passed.
At this point we had a five way tie for first amongst Schwartz,
O'hara, Steiner and Sauer. Taylor was in 5th, Suttle 6th, Johnson
7th, Dutoit & Dragila 8th and Warlick 10th.
At 4.45m 14'07.25 Dragila, O'Hara and Steiner all went clear on
attempt #1. After initial misses Schwartz, Johnson, Sauer and Warlick
all decided to pass. Suttle stayed in to clear on her second, but
Lindsay Taylor and Andrea Dutoit were not so lucky and were
eliminated.
At 4.50m 14'09.00 Dragila once again passed. Schwartz and Johnson
each cleared on their first to move into 1st and 2nd respectively.
More passing games ensued as Suttle and Steiner passed after 1st
attempt failures. tracy O'Hara did the same after 2 misses. Mary
Sauer and Alicia Warlick missed their two remaining attempts at the
height to end their day.
4.55m 14'11.00 saw some great jumps - Suttle, Schwartz and Dragila
all skied over the bar on their first. Johnson missed once and
passed. Steiner and O'Hara - after seeing the three clearances at the
height - decided to save her attempts for the next height as a
clearance would have not put them on the team.
That height was 4.60m 15'01.00. Suprisingly though no clearances were
racked up and the team was set - Stacy Dragila, Jillian Schwartz and
the resilient Kellie Suttle.
Stacy tho was not done. She sailed over 4.65m 15'03.00 on her second
and 4.75m 15'07.00 on her third. She then took three incredible
attempts at a new WR of 4.89m 16'00.50. Unfortuantely the winds began
to swirl and she had to stay on one of her softer sticks. She was
close but it just wasn't to happen today.

WOMEN'S POLE VAULT FINAL
Quotes from http://www.usatf.org/
STACY DRAGILA, Nike
"We have a solid team going to Athens. I feel blessed to be a part of
it. I'm really thrilled."
Regarding her attempt at the world record: "I was feeling that good
today. I wanted to see if I had it in my bag of goods today, but then
the wind started shifting. I gave it a good shot."
JILLIAN SCHWARTZ, Nike
"It was a tough competition. It was amazing, one of the best meets
we've ever had in the United States."
KELLIE SUTTLE, Nike
"This is such a hard competition. I've had the roughest season ever.
I had no expectations coming into the Trials. I'm so excited. I
honestly had no doubt I'd make the team. This is my third team I've
made outdoors.
On her pole breaking: "I didn't have a choice. In the middle of the
Olympic Trials, what are you going to do? I got lucky that someone
was watching over me. When the pole snapped, I squeezed my hand to
make sure I was O.K. I looked at my coach, and forgot about it right
there."

Anyway, it was cool seeing Suttle blow up an ESSX Carbon. She's a hard a** though and it didn't faze her.
Yes it stung her hand and was one of her oldest ESSX carbons (two years the old flame label), with many of her best jumps in the past on it.
Her take off was 10" out and she fully loaded the pole. It forced her on to the next stiffness pole which she needed to clear 14'11" and make the team. We are building her a new one for Athens to fill the gap.
We hate to see any brand pole break
