Dwight is an endorsee of the ESSX High Jump System and works with us, he has seen the board.

i always think of the movie Rad because the main guy Cru Jones wears a hockey helmet when he races his BMX.

Toby is the man and the nickname Crash is not a good one for a vaulter.

If anyone can get me a copy of RAD, I'd pay them 10 dollars! I've been trying to find a copy. If you own it, IM me and we'll exchange addresses so that I can send a video tape with a self-addressed envelope back to me. Thanks.

i think i can quote Stones whole pole vault comentary...or at least pcik out his coin phrases. cause after watching the USA trials and the OG, he sounds pretty much like a broken record.

Everytime I see Toby vaulting, the songs, "Pretty Fly For A White Guy" and "Play That Funky Music" come to my head!

crash?

Unread postby ~jj~ » Tue Aug 31, 2004 11:04 am

Toby has had a couple of fairly significant accidnets.
But I can think of no in the sport who calls him crash (?)!
Seems to me this must be a nick-name Dwight put on him.

I forgot to mention this thread on the Track and Field News message board. http://www.trackandfieldnews.com/tfn/di ... hread=8379

In that thread, Walt Murphy (who was working for NBC at the Olympics I believe) says, "For what it's worth, Toby's OK with the "Crash" nickname, and, yes, Dwight started it."

You know what? I am OK with TV broadcasters making up nicknames for people... but don't play it off like Toby got that nickname in high school, or like that's what the pole vault world calls him. And our event has had it's fair share of negative press... don't give someone a nickname that is going to make parents think the sport is less safe.

the power of tv

Unread postby ~jj~ » Tue Aug 31, 2004 1:44 pm

Rainbow,
I think if I were Toby, I'd be a little miffed. The power of TV is so great that now he will have people calling him crash for the next decade or so.
I don't think that is the kind of thing Toby wants, or needs.
.....my opinion.
~jj~
ps. sorry I've been way so long...
