Most coaches are somewhat nice about it, but if you come in on a big scholarship and end up sucking, most schools are going to at least reduce it.

i was told that you couldn't lose your athletic scholarship unless there was either a medical or character problem (like never going to practice)...? am i wrong here?

We studied it in my sports law class. It's a year to year contract. They have every right to completely cut your scholatship after the first year if they want.

Now most schools won't do that. Most schools have policies about cutting scholarships, they won't just randomly do it. If you work hard on the track and even harder in the classroom, you'll usually be OK.

But back to the original point, other forms of financial aid are a lot easier to get and more reliable than an athletic scholarship.

To take away all of a scholorship is unheard of (and you have an appeal process)......unless you quit, get busted/arrested, basically something huge. Reduction in aid is far more common. You get offered a scholarship as an incoming freshman based on your potential to succeed and competition from other schools. If you do not meet those expectations (ususally within the first 2 yrs) you can almost expect a closed door conversation with the head coach.

Oh yea.........scholarships are on a one yr renewable basis AND anyone saying differently is breaking a written NCAA rule.
