Medical Insurance

Unread postby VaultNinja » Wed Sep 08, 2004 12:34 pm

Does anyone have any tips for getting some medical insurance. I have been training as a post-collegiate without medical insurance for almost a year now, and fear that it may bite me in the a** soon.

I can't get it at work, I can't afford it. The only option I can see is if I discontinue training and work full-time somewhere, but thats not about to happen.

PLEASE if you have any suggestions let me know.................

If you work part-time, you may be able to buy insurance at the group rate from work.

Or, if you're willing to have a high deductable ($1000 or so), being young you can get coverage for probably $50 a month.

If you are a USATF member I think they have some sort of coverage in the event that something happens at a scheduled club practice or competition. If you do not belong to a registered USATF club you may want to start one for yourself and register the sites where you train.

The USATF club practice insurance is liability insurance for the coaches and training facility. It does not cover hospital or doctor bills if you get injured. Also it does not cover clinics or camps, only club practices that are listed on the club practice schedule turned in to insurance company ahead of time.

You'll have to look somewhere other than USATF for health insurance. Ashtung's advise to keep premiums low is a good one if you can afford to pay the first thousand out of pocket. Check into other deductibles to see what works for you. (ex: $250, $500, $1,000, $2,000+) Good luck!

Number one thing USATF could do to become a more useful organization:

Provide affordable health insurance for athletes and coaches.
