Track Gets Five Early Commitments

 
Bears ink all in-state athletes during November signing period.

WACO, Texas - The Baylor track & field team has signed Erin Bedell, Quentin Summers, Racheal Long, Jacob Norman and Kaleigh Teel to National Letters of Intent, head coach Clyde Hart announced Tuesday.

Teel, from Friendswood High School, placed sixth in the pole vault at the Class 4A state championships and has a personal best of 12 feet. She also was a member of the Friendswood cross country team that placed 10th at the Class 4A state meet.

Pole vaulter holds school record; decides to sign with Nebraska early

When Louisiana State University called Grand Island Northwest pole vaulter Sam Ogden, he had an answer ready.

Thanks but no thanks, Ogden told the defending NCAA championship track team. He already knew he was headed for Nebraska.

Ogden signed an official letter of intent to join the Huskers on Wednesday.

"When I was a freshman and a sophomore, I really didn't think I was going to make it," Ogden said. "But then after last year, that's when I really started thinking about it."

Ogden could have waited to sign but decided to get it done early.

"I was just thinking that this is the place I really wanted to go," Ogden said. "So I thought I should just do it now instead of waiting."

Ogden won the Class B pole vault title last spring as a junior. He also cleared 16-feet earlier in the spring to set the Northwest school record as well as the Central 10 Conference mark.

Ogden said it will be good to work with the Nebraska coaches, including pole vault coach Rick Attig.

"I've been to their camp," Ogden said. "He said if I go there, he could really help me out."

Northwest coach Dave Gee said it's great to have a Division I athlete in the program.

"We're really excited about having Sam commit to the University of Nebraska this early in his career," Gee said. "Obviously he's a great vaulter. It gives our program a lot of credibility."

Ogden's 16-0 vault is second on The Independent's all-time track charts behind state record holder Gabe Baldwin, a 2003 graduate of Grand Island Central Catholic. Baldwin cleared 16-4 is senior season with the Crusaders and is now a vaulter for the Nebraska team.

Gee said Ogden certainly has the potential to get much higher.

"We feel like Sam is going to be a great, great pole vaulter," Gee said. "You know 16-0 as a junior is already a tremendous mark, but we see a lot of potential in Sam.

"He's a great scholar of the event. He works hard and understands the event. He may not be the fastest or the strongest, but he working on those things. He has great body awareness and also just understands the event very well."

Gee and Odgen both give much of the credit to GINW pole vault coach Dave McNeel.

"We're very fortunate to have one of the top pole vault coaches here in Nebraska with Dave McNeel here at Northwest," Gee said. "Year in and year out we have great vaulters. Sam's just a testament to that."

Carlson signs on with UVM

BRATTLEBORO -- Jan Carlson has signed her name thousands of times in her life, but no signature to this point has been as important as the one she inked on Tuesday.

The line she signed was on a national letter of intent to go to the University of Vermont, where she'll receive a full athletic scholarship to be a member of the women's track and field team.

Carlson, daughter of Cassie Carlson, has already won seven track and field state championships as a member of Brattleboro's indoor and outdoor squads and she still has one more year of high school competition to go.

"Jan ranks as one of the top female track athletes in the school's history," Colonel coach John Dimick said. "She's had a major impact on the program since she was a freshman. She's one of the best we've had in girls track."

Carlson has been one of the top prep track athletes in the state of Vermont for the past three years and she was ecstatic when she found out she was going to get a chance to become part of the Catamounts' Division I team.

"When I heard I was getting a full ride it was a great feeling," said Carlson, who holds school records in the 200 meters, triple jump and pole vault. "My mom was so proud. I'm really excited to be able to go to college for free -- it's a huge deal."

Carlson visited a number of colleges in New England, including Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine, but she decided on Vermont a month ago after taking her official visit to Burlington and meeting the coaches and some of the athletes on the team.

"I really liked it," Carlson said. "After my visit, I decided that I could do very well up there."

UVM head coach Matt Belfield must've been pretty impressed by Carlson, too.

"He was the first coach to tell me he wanted me there," Carlson said. "When he told me I could get a free education, that caught my attention."

Carlson plans to major in science and has designs on becoming a biomedical technician -- like her mother.

Carlson led the Colonel girls track team to a second place finish at the State Track and Field Championships last spring, scoring 38 of a possible 40 points. She won the 100, 200 and pole vault and finished second in the triple jump -- her final event of the day.

"From the time she was a freshman, she's been someone to be reckoned with in the state," Dimick said. "She has lots of natural ability. She's been a top-notch sprinter since she was little."

At UVM, Carlson will be doing sprints and triple jump, but her main focus will be on the pole vault.

"I think her best event will be the pole vault," Dimick said. "She can use her speed, size and strength and convert it."

Track has been Carlson's main focus since she hung up her gymnastics leotard 10 years ago and it's made her into the person she is today.

"Track has provided me with some great experiences," she said. "I wouldn't be the same without it."

Now, after signing and sending off her letter of intent and financial offer on Wednesday, she's insured of being able to run and jump for at least four more years.

Red Raider Track and Field Signs Three on First Day

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Track and Field announced the signing of three student-athletes, as today marks the initial day for the early National Signing Period for all sports with the exception of football and women's soccer.

Amanda Alley, a pole vaulter, is from Crosbyton, Texas. Alley is a standout pole vaulter at Crosbyton High School. Alley is a two-time state champion in the pole vault and her personal best is 12'-3".

Jared Ede, a pole vaulter from Harlingen, Texas, was the first to sign. Ede attended Harlingen High School and his personal best is 15'.

Zuyderwyk signs South Dakota state champion

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The reigning South Dakota girls pole vault champion will bring her skills to Purdue this fall for assistant track and field coach Rodney Zuyderwyk.

Mallory Peck, who chose Purdue over Montana State, Wisconsin, Duke and Minnesota, made her decision because West Lafayette reminds her of her hometown, Sioux Falls, S.D., and because of Purdue's reputation.

"I'm excited to be able to compete in the pole vault at a Division I school," said Peck. "Purdue was my top choice because it offered a good combination of athletics and academics, plus I'll be training with a great coach and other great pole vaulters."

Peck is currently a senior at O'Gorman High School, where she is the defending state champion in the pole vault. At last year's state championship, Peck recorded a state record leap of 12 feet, 5 inches. She also was a silver medalist in the vault at the 2004 USATF Junior Olympics.

As a high school sophomore, Peck was the state runner-up in the long jump and placed fifth in the high jump.

Peck also has succeeded in gymnastics and cheerleading. In 2003 and 2004, Peck was state champion in the all-around competition, and has won state titles on the beam and vault, as well. She also is a member of the South Dakota United Performing Association's All-State Stunt Cheer Team.

"I'm excited about her athletic abilities," said Zuyderwyk, who coaches pole vault, javelin, multis and hurdles. "She is an extremely talented individual, who will continue Purdue's recent tradition of excellence in the pole vault."

Zuyderwyk has coached three individuals, Ebbie Metzinger, Simona Kovacic and Hence "Pooh" Williams, to Big Ten pole vault titles since coming to Purdue in 2001. In 2003, Zuyderwyk's women's vault crew became one of only three schools in the country to have all five of its competitors qualify and compete at the NCAA Regional Championships.
