Miles stays in the winning groove


Moving quickly on from his personal best win (5.85m) last Saturday in Donetsk, American Derek Miles continued his successful indoor season with another Pole Vault victory at just 4cm lower. However, none of the vaulters were exactly on song in what was a scrappy competition where first time clearances were in short supply for the entire eight man field.


Miles’ winning 5.81m was taken on his first, as was his opening height (5.56), while second placed Denys Yurchenko of Ukraine (5.76) and World Indoor champion Igor Pavlov of Russia (5.71) who was the next best, topped the first time clearance total with three a piece. Miles made three attempts at 5.93, but none of them were close.

derek is off to another great start this year. he didnt win reno but watch out when indoor nationals come around!! right now he is looking unstopable and thats what we need here in the US.
If you cant do it right , do if 10000 more times till you can

elite guys are on an entirely diff schedule...derek always has a tendency to jump high early, has for the last several years...toby is probably trying to set up so he will be ready later in the season...it's a long road for them still

Toby Stevenson might be getting on 520 poles this year. It looked like he was jumping on a 520 in Reno. If that's the case, he's going to have to get used to the timing and won't be completely sharp for a while. Of course, I could be wrong. It's hard to eye these sorts of things. Either way, as mentioned by wacky274, it is a bit early for him to be jumping high if he is looking to peak in Helsinki, which I am sure he is, along with Tim Mack and others.

Elites aim to peak in August...while everyone on this board wants to peak in May or June at the latest....I remember Russ saying a few years ago that he didn't touch a pole until the elite competition at reno.

yes this is true. why would they want to jump there highest height when the championships are 6 months away.... you cant PR all the time.
i think before my days are done.
